Mission

We believe that prints, handmade paper and book arts are a source of inspiration, that experimentation leads to discovery, and that creativity is the cornerstone of the learning process. It is our goal to inspire artistic excellence, promote educational enrichment, and foster community engagement through programs and activities that promote the appreciation of these artistic practices.

We are one of the few arts organizations in the country that has printmaking, papermaking, and bookmaking under one roof. Our programs, facility, and expertise equip, educate, and exhibit artists.

Form 990

Form 990, part 1, line 19: loss includes write offs of 53,420 comprised primarily of outdated stock and capital campaign pledges deemed uncollectable. Remaining loss also includes amortization of the leasehold improvements in the new facility, which was larger than anticipated in this first year of occupancy, and an operational shortfall due to year of physical and leadership transition.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Despite the many changes of fy17, pyramid delivered on very ambitious programmatic goals, reaching approximately 8,000 people through its facility and programs. Pyramid equipped artists by creating and filling its 18 private artist studios (24 artists in occupancy). In its ~5,000 sq. Ft. Of shared studio space (book bindery, darkroom, papermaking, print shop, screen printing, and letterpress shop), we welcomed 31 artists in residence who used these shared studio spaces heavily to hone their craft and make new bodies of work. This number includes artistic associates, "art gym" members, and competitive artist residencies that welcomed artists from across the country. Further pyramid's frequent "happy hours" allow artists to come in and work on self-directed projects with the support of an artistic associate. Total, we estimate about 100 artists utilized these shared studios on a regular basis outside of the education programs. As most of our equipment is antique, specific, and large, pyramid served as a much needed resource to artists who would be unlikely to replicate these resources in a private studio setting. Pyramid educated in fy17 through offering approximately 150 workshops targeted at varying levels of expertise in adult creatives. Over 450 adults registered for these classes. We also served over 750 high school and middle school student through in-school and on-site classes and demonstrations that connect our work with school curriculum. We trained 10 high school and college interns by giving lessons in each of our studios, artistic mentorship, and studio time. We also took our expertise on the road to the phillips collection, the freer/sackler gallery, and the baltimore museum of art to showcase techniques in papermaking and printmaking that amplified the museums' exhibitions by giving visitors hands-on experiences. Lastly, we participated in 11 community events in the hyattsville area, from open studio tours to arts festivals, to bike treks. For these events we offered free hands-on demonstrations to get the young and the uninitiated interested in printmaking, papermaking, and book arts. Pyramid hosted 5 exhibitions in fy17. The gallery schedule was unable to fully start until november due to issues of the move to the new building. In april 2017 the organization decided that the gallery space was insufficient for the quality of art shows it planned to mount. Pyramid removed a few walls to open up the space, doubling the linear feet available for artwork and creating a much better and beautiful flow on the gallery level. We celebrated the anniversary in our space with an exhibition called one year later that marked the 52 weeks pyramid had been open in its new space with 52 artists, including work by established artists such as linn meyers and bill dunlap as well as many emerging talents.

There were prior period accounting errors resulting in an overstatement of previously reported capital assets and an understatement of previously reported loan receivables and contribution revenue for the year ended june 30,2016 as such there was a prior period adjustment of 8,691.

Schedule D, Page 4, Part XIII

The organization is exempt from income taxes under 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code on all but its unrelated business income. The organization is not classified as a private foundation by the internal revenue service. The organization had no unrelated business income for the years ended june 30, 2017 or 2016. Consequently, there is no provision for income taxes. The organization adopted the provisions of fasb asc accounting standard codification 740-10, "accounting for uncertainty in income taxes," on july 1, 2009 having no significant impact on its financial statements. The provisions clarify the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an organization's financial statements. Tax return filings are subject to examination by the irs, generally for three years after they are filed. The organization's tax returns for tax years before 2014 are no longer subject to examination.
