Twenty (20) are elected; thirty-three (33) are appointed by the board's president, after rigorous vetting; and four (4) are entitled to board membership by virtue of their position (the immediate past president; the president of dref; the national chaplain; and the grand chapter's executive director).”

The national board of directors includes the elected national officers, elected regional officers, and national appointed chairs. Each member is required to sign a conflict of interest.”
