Mission

Empowering survivors to break the cycle of violence and abuse in their lives.

First step: a response to domestic violence empowers individuals through support, advocacy, and education. We are committed to the elimination of domestic violence in our community. With the goal of helping survivors become self-empowered, first step is dedicated to providing: 24 hour crisis hotline, planning for safety, shelter, support group, court accompaniment and legal adovcacy, financial empowerment, children's support and advocacy, and referrals.

Domestic violence emergency shelter: first step provides emergency, temporary shelter to victims of domestic violence and their minor children who have no other safe place to stay. Individuals being sheltered by first step are provided a safe place to sleep and living area, linens/towels, bathroom, television, computer, internet, laundry facilities, food storage, and food preparation area. Guests are provided items to meet their basic needs (e.g. Food, clothing, school supplies, personal items, gift cards and disinfecting/cleaning/household supplies). Case management, advocacy, and supportive services are offered to all adult and child guests. All of first step's services are free of charge and confidential. 75% of direct services expenses went to the domestic violence emergency shelter services. For the year ending june 30, 2020, 64 adult victims of domestic violence and 39 children were sheltered by first step. 32 households sheltered exited to permanent housing and first step provided rental assistance to 18 of those households.

FIRST STEP ALSO OFFERS FOLLOW-UP SUPPORT SERVICES TO VICTIMS THAT EXIT THE SHELTER. ALL OF FIRST STEP'S SERVICES ARE FREE OF CHARGE AND CONFIDENTIAL. 13% OF DIRECT SERVICE EXPENSES WENT TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SUPPORT SERVICES.

THIS ALSO INCLUDES STAFF TIME ON THE PROJECT. FOR YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2020, THE ORGANIZATION ASSISTED 18 HOUSEHOLDS (18 ADULT VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND 8 CHILDREN) THROUGH THIS RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM. 12% OF DIRECT SERVICE EXPENSES WENT TO RAPID RE-HOUSING PROGRAM ASSISTANCE.

GUESTS ARE PROVIDED ITEMS TO MEET THEIR BASIC NEEDS (E.G. FOOD, CLOTHING, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, PERSONAL ITEMS, GIFT CARDS AND DISINFECTING/CLEANING/HOUSEHOLD SUPPLIES). CASE MANAGEMENT, ADVOCACY, AND SUPPORTIVE SERVICES ARE OFFERED TO ALL ADULT AND CHILD GUESTS. ALL OF FIRST STEP'S SERVICES ARE FREE OF CHARGE AND CONFIDENTIAL. 75% OF DIRECT SERVICES EXPENSES WENT TO THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE EMERGENCY SHELTER SERVICES. FOR THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2020, 64 ADULT VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND 39 CHILDREN WERE SHELTERED BY FIRST STEP. 32 HOUSEHOLDS SHELTERED EXITED TO PERMANENT HOUSING AND FIRST STEP PROVIDED RENTAL ASSISTANCE TO 18 OF THOSE HOUSEHOLDS.
