“OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: About California Shakespeare Theater (continued from form 990 Page 2) these works or considered them relevant to their lives. Our 2017 season brought a new dimension to this missionwe challenged those who are already assured of the inherent value of the Western literary tradition to open their hearts and minds to the voices and traditions that are new to them, and celebrate with us the extraordinary diversityand the wonderful resonanceof the human theater tradition. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Main Stage (continued from Form 990 Page 2)premiere of black odyssey, by Oakland native Marcus Gardley, directed by Eric Ting. We closed our season with Measure for Measure, directed by Tyne Rafaeli, in a coproduction with Santa Cruz Shakespeare. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Artistic Engagement (continued from Form 990 Page 2)engaged two-spirit, trans spectrum, genderqueer, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and gender-expansive youth (18-24) in a discussion about loving outside the gender binary. Our black odyssey Story Circle engaged African American community members ranging in age from teens to seniors in a discussion about Black spirituality, referencing the plays central theme of needing to confront ones own ancestral past to find the resolve to face present-day challenges. In addition to the offering mentioned above, our Civic Dialogues were: Changing the Face of Theater, with Patty Berne, Co-Founder of Sins Invalid (a disabled-positive performance group), Jon Tracy, Artistic Director of TheatreFirst, and Phoebe Fico and Sean San Jos from our production of The Glass Menagerie; and Morality and the State, on the ways the state seeks to control our bodies and the role that art can play in resisting this, with Artist-Investigator Tatiana Chaterji in residency at FCI Dublin womens prison, Measure for Measure director Tyne Rafaeli, and internationally recognized poet and founder of The Body is Not an Apology, Sonya Renee Taylor. Since his arrival at Cal Shakes, Eric has brought a new depth to our community partnerships. He has included community partners in the planning of our season, integrated community voices with the theater-going experience at the Bruns, and greatly extended the duration of projects to enable deeper mutual buy-in. This year, for example, we launched a three-year project through our New Classics Initiative with ICCNC to collect 1,001 stories from Muslim and Middle Eastern communities across the Bay Area in conjunction with development of a new adaptation of A Thousand and One Stories by a playwrights Evren Odcikin and Leila Buck, both of Middle Eastern heritage. In addition, our Artist-Investigator project at FCI Dublin has engaged 43 women prisoners in a theater residency so far and is planned to engage all 300+ inmates through 2018. The Theater Stage at Youth Speaks Life is Living Festival, now in its third year, has grown so popular that we had to hold auditions this year. Seventeen artists performed for an audience of 421 people. Well over 80% of those engaged through all of these programs are people and artists of color. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: Artistic Learning (continued from Form 990 Page 2)and chaperones to six Student Discovery matinees of As You Like and Measure for Measure. Our classrooms residencies bring theater to schools in low income neighborhoods, and our Summer Shakespeare Conservatories offer budding theater artists a nurturing environment for creative risk and artistic growth. Finally, our Shakespeare Conservatories programs offer rigorous acting training to 300-plus youth every summer. One-in-three Conservatory students attends with scholarship support. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 8: Other (continued from Schedule 0)The New Classics Initiative (NCI) reexamines classics of Western literature through diverse perspectives and raises up the classical traditions of diverse cultures. Our production of black odysseythe plays second everincluded a significant re-write and a new score”

“Income TaxesFinancial statement presentation follows the recommendations of ASC 740, Income Taxes. Under ASC 740, Cal Shakes is required to report information regarding its exposure to various tax positions taken by Cal Shakes and requires a two-step process that separates recognition from measurement. The first step is determining whether a tax position has met the recognition threshold; the second step is measuring a tax position that meets the recognition threshold. Management believes that Cal Shakes has adequately evaluated its current tax positions and has concluded that as of December 31, 2017 Cal Shakes does not have any uncertain tax positions for which a reserve or an accrual for a tax liability would be necessary.Cal Shakes has received notification from the Internal Revenue Service and the State of California that it qualifies for tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and Section 23701d of the California Revenue and Taxation Code. This exemption is subject to periodic review by the federal and state taxing authorities and management is confident that the organization continues to satisfy all federal and state statutes in order to qualify for continued tax exemption status. Cal Shakes may periodically receive unrelated business income requiring the organization to file separate tax returns under federal and state statutes. Under such conditions, Cal Shakes calculates and accrues the applicable taxes payable.”
