IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, BECAUSE OF BUDGET CUTS BY CONGRESS, DID NOT HOLD A NEW COMPETITION FOR THE CAROL M. WHITE PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM GRANT AWARDS. THESE GRANTS ARE THE ONLY SOURCE OF FEDERAL FUNDING DEDICATED TO PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ALSO REQUIRE (AND SUPPORT) INSTRUCTION IN HEALTHY EATING HABITS AND GOOD NUTRITION, THIS HAS HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON HEALTHY KIDS CHALLENGE. ALSO LIMITING TO PROGRESS IS LESS FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR OTHER GRANTS TO SUPPORT NUTRITION EDUCATION. SUPPORT FOR NUTRITION EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS HAS FURTHER DECREASED DUE TO CUTBACKS IN FUNDING. WHEN FUNDING IS AVAILABLE, OUTCOMES FROM HEALTHY KIDS CHALLENGE (HKC) SERVICES ARE VERY SUCCESSFUL. HKC SERVICES HAVE A VERY BROAD APPEAL AS CHILDHOOD AND ADULT OBESITY, THE SURGE IN DIABETES, AND THE EMPHASIS ON CHRONIC DISEASE REDUCTION AND PREVENTION IS IN THE FOREFRONT OF PUBLIC HEALTH. HEALTHY KIDS CHALLENGE PROVIDES SERVICES RATHER THAN FACILITIES. HKC ACTIVITIES IMPACT ALL ENVIRONMENTS WHERE KIDS AND FAMILIES LIVE, LEARN, WORK AND PLAY. SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES ARE NOT LIMITED BY REGION AS THEY HAVE A NATIONAL REACH WITHIN A SPECIALIZED FIELD OF HEALTH PROMOTION AND DISEASE PREVENTION RELATED TO HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. EVEN SO, MANY OF THE FUNDS FROM GOVERNMENTAL GRANTS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE FOR INSTITUTIONAL OR RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS. THE GOVERNMENTAL GRANTS GOING TO STATE, INSTITUTIONAL OR RESEARCH AGENCIES OR ORGANIZATIONS OFTEN UTILIZE THOSE FUNDS THROUGH THEIR EXISTING NETWORK AND PROGRAMS AND DO NOT OFTEN SEE THE OPPORTUNITY TO OFFER THAT TO OUTSIDE NONPROFITS SUCH AS HEALTHY KIDS CHALLENGE. BECAUSE HEALTHY KIDS CHALLENGE IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH AN INSTITUTION OR ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION, WE PARTNER AND WORK WITH THOSE GOVERNMENTAL UNITS, ORGANIZATIONS AND OTHER FUNDERS AS WE CAN.THE WORK OF HKC IS FOCUSED ON EDUCATION, POLICY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUPPORT OF HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. THE FOUNDATION FOR THE WORK IS EVIDENCED BASED BEST PRACTICES INCLUDING THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC), THE INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE, MYPLATE, LET'S MOVE, AND DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR AMERICANS. HEALTHY KIDS CHALLENGE ACTIVITIES ARE RECOGNIZED BY THE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS AS INNOVATIVE NUTRITION EDUCATION FOR THE PUBLIC. HEALTHY KIDS CHALLENGE IS ALSO ON THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR THE CDC HEALTH EDUCATION ANALYSIS TOOL - HEALTHY EATING, A TOOL FOR EVALUATING NUTRITION EDUCATION RESOURCES FOR SCHOOLS AND HAS ADVISED OTHER RECOGNIZED NATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. THE COMPREHENSIVE HEALTHY KIDS CHALLENGE CURRICULUM, WHICH SERVES YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS AND SCHOOLS, MEETS HEALTH EDUCATION STANDARDS SET BY THE ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS (GENIE), CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL (HECAT) AND THE ALLIANCE FOR A HEALTHIER GENERATION (HOST)ALTHOUGH INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT, HEALTHY KIDS CHALLENGE ACTIVELY SOLICITS GRANTS AND FUNDING FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC. HKC STRATEGIES INCLUDE YEARLY GRANT APPLICATIONS, AS OPPORTUNITIES ARE OFFERED. WORK FROM A NUMBER GRANTS PROVIDING FUNDING IN 2014, CONTINUED THROUGH 2015.
