Form 990, Part I, Line 1, Description of Organization

Bethel college is a four-year faith-based liberal arts institution founded in 1887 under the auspices of what is now mennonite church usa. Bethel is known for academic excellence and high-quality professional programs. Bethel graduates in nursing, social work and teacher education are in high demand statewide and regionally. The college has the state's highest percentage of students who go on to complete m.d. And ph.d. Degrees. Bethel alumni consistently mention how well bethel prepared them for graduate work. Bethel's charter stated from the beginning that it would be a college "open to all, and that is also part of the college's longstanding reputation. In recent years, this has translated to bethel being the first college or university in kansas to be part of truth, racial healing and transformation (trht), a multi-year project of the kellogg foundation that seeks to create change by addressing the contemporary effects of racism in communities and institutions. Bethel was named a trht campus center in 2019, and now has its first vice president for culture and belonging to carry on and extend the work of trht and other efforts to foster inclusion and belonging on campus. Bethel has welcomed its first cohorts of students who will go through their tenure (as first-year or transfer students) as part of employment experiences, through which all students have jobs, on campus or off, and receive an annual grant toward tuition. Bethel is the only college or university in the state with such a program, and is on track for federally designated work college status. Employment experiences is an important piece of bethel's goal of graduating students who are both prepared to enter the workforce and less strapped by college debt. Other things bethel is known for: an award-winning music program, both vocal and instrumental; an emphasis on undergraduate research and stem internships at top research institutions; and one of the oldest peacebuilding and conflict resolution institutes in the united states, the kansas institute for peace and conflict resolution. Finally, bethel alumni consistently mention the long-term effects of bethel's "culture of community" - resulting in lifelong friendships that spring from participation in team sports and residence hall life, strong mentoring relationships with faculty, and frequent returns to campus for homecoming and other special events.
