The Champ Foundation supports research toward better treatments and a cure for diseases casued by mitochondrial DNA deletions, such as Pearson syndrome. These diseases are rare. For example, there have only been around 100 reported cases of Pearson syndrome.
The Champ Foundation supports research toward better treatment and a cure for diseases caused by mitochondrial DNA deletions, with an emphasis on Pearson Syndrome. These diseases are very rare; for example, there have only been around 100 cases of Pearson Syndrome described in the literature since its discovery in 1979. Current "treatments" only address symptoms as they present themselves. Therefore, The Champ Foundation seeks to fund research that speeds the development of treatment and a cure.

| In 2017, The Champ Foundation expanded it's research funding through our first call for grants. Our Scientific Advisory Board recommended funding for two projects. The first "CD34+ cells enriched with blood cells derived healthy mitochondria as a treatment for Pearson Syndrome" seeks to employ a novel treatment based on stem cell transplant and is being undertaken at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv. The second, "Treatments and models for diseases caused by mitochondrial deletions," is being undertaken at the University of Cambridge. We also continued our support to Boston Children's project. All three projects characterize The Champ Foundation's approach. We seek out talented researchers at excellent institutions, whose intellectual interest in mitochondrial DNA deletion disorders has been hindered by financial concerns. We believe that these diseases can be treated and cured, provided that capable researchers and clinicians are aware of the problem and allowed to pursue a solution. | $260,000 | $0 |
| In 2018, The Champ Foundation continued its support of high quality mitochondrial disease research across the globe. Researchers at Cambridge and the University of Miami published exciting research that has moved gene editing technologies closer to the clinic. In 2018, the team at Sheba Medical Center submitted an IND application to the FDA, which utilized results from The Champ Foundation's grant. The application was approved and enrollment in a Phase I/II clinical trial will begin in 2019. In addition to research funding, The Champ Foundation organized the first conference devoted to mtDNA deletion research. The conference gathered researchers from around the world and has inspired fruitful collaborations. It is important to note that this conference was financed with funds from outside The Champ Foundation. The Champ Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to research. | $170,000 | $0 |
