Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To give everyone the opportunity to be involved in, educated about, and entertained by the art of live theatre.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
TAFE is a community teaching theatre. We intentionally seek to include populations that are marginalized in theatre, such as seniors, inner city children, and people with intellectual disabilities. We also have many people who are seasoned theatre veterans and those interested in trying theatre for the first time. We focus on featuring plays that are originally-written or are not well known. TAFE's services fall under 3 pillars of work: Pillar 1 - Youth and Family Theatre A space for adults and children alike to imagine, create, learn, and grow together while creating performances for all ages. The main vehicle is full-length plays, but we also offer different activities, like game nights, throughout the year. Pillar 2 - Theatre Arts Education To be a home for theatre arts education, giving everyone the opportunity to learn about theatre, the world, and themselves. This space includes camps, classes, workshops and our touring program, which has shows specifically designed towards youth and seniors. Pillar 3 - Adult Perspectives A theatrical experience that stimulates growth in artists and patrons, and creates a deeper sense of community through productions that broaden perspectives and grow awareness. The main vehicle is full-length plays, but we also offer online playreading sessions, murder mysteries, and other activities throughout the year. TAFE has two different types of audiences. The people we serve and the people we entertain. The people we serve audition for our shows and participate in our programs. Our shows are open to everyone for auditions. We do not charge any fees, which removes any economic barriers from participation. Our shows are tailored to those involved; from experienced to complete beginners, from youth to seniors, and for those with disabilities and those without. For past shows, we have served people from all over York County and beyond. The TAFE season is specifically created to be intergenerational, for people ages seven to one-hundred and seven. We try to get a mix of both experienced and inexperienced people in different roles to create a learning environment while striving for as polished an end production as possible. TAFE's artistic director and experienced volunteers have the education and training to continually adjust methodologies based on the needs and abilities of every group with whom they work. The people we entertain are the audiences that fill the seats during a show. They reflect a diversity as broad as York County. was founded on October 1, 2016 as a community theatre that is community-minded. We launched a full season in 2017, hosting camps, classes, and residencies. Our reach into the community rapidly grew in 2018-2019. After mounting one mainstage production, the pandemic forced shutdowns in the first quarter of 2020. TAFE quickly pivoted to online platforms, making 4 virtual theatre productions accessible to ages 7 on up from home. We also partnered with select senior centers with outdoor performances and interactive written activities. In 2021, our season included three virtual shows and one in-person show. In 2022, we returned to a full live and in-person season of shows, and piloted three new initiatives; an after-school theatre arts program, a senior touring show, and "pay-as-you-wish" performance for each of our season shows. TAFE has one paid employee relying on a team of hundreds of dedicated volunteers. The organization is led by an active, engaged, and invested 12-member board of directors that meets monthly, as well as our founder, Diane Crews. TAFE is the second community theatre in York founded by Diane. Serving as Artistic Director/Playwright in Residence, she has more than 47 years of experience in theatre and is a well-known and respected director and educator.
