Doctors for Cannabis Regulation

EIN 47-5335200 • 501(c)3 • Washington, DC

Profile

Doctors for Cannabis Regulation (DFCR) serves as a voice for physicians who believe that cannabis prohibition has failed and that the misuse of cannabis should be treated as a health issue rather than a criminal one. DFCR's physician members strive neither to minimize nor to exaggerate scientific literature about the risks and benefits of cannabis use. DFCR promotes evidence-based strategies to prevent recreational marijuana use by minors and misuse by adults. Through education of physicians and the public, DFCR supports the legalization and effective regulation of cannabis in the United States and around the world.

Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Doctors for Cannabis Regulation (DFCR) serves as a voice for physicians who believe that cannabis prohibition has failed and that the misuse of cannabis should be treated as a health issue rather than a criminal one. DFCR's physician members strive neither to minimize nor to exaggerate scientific literature about the risks and benefits of cannabis use. DFCR promotes evidence-based strategies to prevent recreational marijuana use by minors and misuse by adults. Through education of physicians and the public, DFCR supports the legalization and effective regulation of cannabis in the United States and around the world.

Education is the backbone of our efforts. Our primary campaigns focus on expounding three underlying messages: * The potential health benefits of prohibited drugs are under-recognized and harm reduction approaches will improve individual and public health. * Physicians must help undo the past damages of drug prohibition. * Many of the fears of ending drug prohibition are unfounded. D4DPR provides specific guidance to federal and regional lawmakers, voters, and medical organizations on the optimal approaches for cannabis, psychedelic, opioid, and other drug regulation.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Education of the general public and healthcare providers on drug policy issues through webinars, social media, op-eds, letters to the editor, and media appearances. Webinar subjects included hemp derrived cannabinoids, international drug policies, and psychedelics. Position papers published on cannabis scheduling, and opiate overdose prevention centers.$0$2,950
Using a grant from Drug Policy Alliance, we are creating a toolkit to empower and enable physicians to become more influential advocates.$0$2,326
D4DPR's work in standardized cannabis labeling continues to shape state-level regulatory policies. The International Intoxicating Cannabinoid Product Symbol (IICPS), already in use in four states (Montana, New Jersey, South Dakota, and Vermont), is now the universal symbol for the State of Arkansas. Three additional states (Minnesota, Delaware, and Virginia) have recently proposed its adoption. D4DPR's set of standardized warnings was recently adopted by the State of Maine, the first state to do so.$0$2,107
Active members in coalitions with shared interests, e.g. Drug Policy Alliance's Marijuana Justice Coalition, National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, Marijuana Policy Project, New Jersey United for Marijuana Reform, Right Response Colorado, Hawaii Alliance for Cannabis Reform.$0$1,686
Expanding our mission to address drug-related issues, beyond cannabis. This expansion allows our organization to address a wider range of drug policy issues, reduce stigma, include more experts in international drug policy issues as well as health professionals and experts who may have concerns about various drugs' effects on public health or potential benefits for health and wellness, and engage in advocacy and policy reform efforts that have a more comprehensive impact on public health and drug regulation.$0$1,685
