Mission and Program Overview

Mission

works to support Washington cheese and cheesemakers through education, promotion, and collaboration amongst its members and partners.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Education: Together with the in-kind sponsors of our USDA FMPP grant, we made three educational opportunities available to our membership: two Pasteurization Workshops and an Advanced Cheese Making Short Course (held and funded by Washington State University in April), a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) certification course. We worked with the organizers to schedule and promote these courses, as well as to educate our members about the courses and how to sign up for them. While we did not pay for the educational events to be put on, we did expend labor hours to promote them to our membership and get folks signed up.--
Collaboration: An official proclamation from the governor's office created Washington Cheese Month in June, which provided the opportunity to promote our state's creameries and to offer opportunities for them to come together and share their cheeses with the community. Grant funds supported our executive director's labor to provide data for the proclamation request and the activation of marketing campaigns around Washington Cheese Month, as well as the creation of some marketing materials to be used at this and future events, for which we acquired special software to create high-quality marketing imagery.--
Promotion: To celebrate Washington Cheese Month and leverage it as an opportunity to share more information about our state's creameries on our social media channels, we put on a Cheese & Beer Festival, offering pairings of local beers partnered with local cheeses; attendees received educational materials about the creameries and their cheeses and got a chance to talk to the cheesemakers in person. We also held two Meet the Cheesemaker events, small and intimate seminars where members of the community got to ask questions of a panel of local cheesemakers, walk through a guided tasting of their cheeses, and then mingle with them while purchasing cheese to take home. Some of the funds to support this were travel expenses to help our executive director be on-site to organize and put on each event and to support the cheesemakers in the lead up to the public parts of the event. Other funds used here went toward marketing materials to promote these events, toward supplies for the guided tasting and service portions of the events, and toward venue fees for putting on the events.--
