Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Cancer Prevention Initiative, Inc. (CPI) is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to accelerate the discovery and development of new medicines that prevent cancer. CPI uses its research, medical and pharmaceutical expertise to invest in first-rate science that will discover new strategies for preventing cancer. Our strategy is to support research on prevention of inherited cancers as a path towards elimination of all cancers. CPI acts as a facilitator to ensure that good ideas can find sufficient funding to turn them into therapeutic solutions such as drugs or vaccines to prevent cancer. CPI provides financial support, guidance and expertise throughout the research and development process to help researchers use the resources (donations) for the highest possible impact.

Governing body has no committees with authority to act on behalf of the board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

All members of the governing body receive a copy of the 990 prior to filing, with the opportunity for input and questions.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The Board of Trustees annually reviews the Conflict of Interest policy and each covered person is annually required to sign a statement that discloses all potential conflicts of interest and affirms that such person: 1. Has received a copy of the Conflict of Interest Policy; 2. Has read and understand the Conflict of Interest policy; 3. Has agreed to comply with the Conflict of Interest Policy; 4. Understands that CPI is a charitable organization and that in order to maintain its federal tax exemption and the trust of the public it must diligently avoid conflicts of interest or the appearance of any conflict of interest and engage primarily in activities that accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization complies with IRC Section 6104 in regard to public disclosure. As such, our annual information returns, Conflict of Interest Policy, audited financial reports, and governing documents are available for public inspection upon request.

Form 990, Part IX, Line 1

New grants made in 2023 totaled $200,000 (see Schedule I). This amount is offset by the return of $146,633.26 from a 2018 grant made to Johns Hopkins University. The grantee was unable to complete their contracted project. Net grant expenses for 2023 were $200,000 - $146,633 = $53,367.

IRS990/Desc0In 2023, Cancer Prevention Initiative (CPI) opened an application cycle to identify new projects to fund. We accepted proposals pertaining to the therapeutic prevention of any inherited cancer, as we wish to expand our research portfolio beyond BRCA1/2 mutated cancers to all inherited cancers. We received applications covering all three strategic categories of research: Discovery research that expands the knowledge of early-pre-cancer stages and mechanisms of cancer initiation, development of early detection tests, and the development of chemo and/or immunotherapeutic agents. The response exceeded our expectations, with a total of 79 applications received. This volume indicates both the need for funding in this area and the enthusiasm of the research community to invest their discovery efforts in prevention. Also in 2023, CPI's ongoing research grant recipients have advanced towards greater understanding of preventing inherited cancers. Ongoing projects include Cleveland Clinic, where investigators seek to identify proteins uniquely and highly expressed in breast cancer of BRCA1 mutation carriers. Identification of these unique proteins is an important link for developing preventative vaccines. Also continuing is a project with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to generate a robust cellular assay that would allow for the screening of hundreds of compounds to identify determinants of Loss of Heterozygosity (LoH) of BRCA genes. LoH is a major driver in cancer initiation, and discovery of compounds that cause LoH can be key for prevention discoveries. Other ongoing projects include Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where they are working to identify cancer risk predictors in the reproductive epithelium in BRCA mutation carriers, and work at the University of Toronto to screen for drugs that can restore normal BRCA1 function to BRCA1 deficient cells.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Education and engagement programs: As we move closer to our goal of eradicating all cancers through preventative medicines, we believe that educating the public and raising awareness about inherited cancer syndromes will inspire more individuals to take proactive, life-saving preventive measures. One of the goals is to enhance the scientific reach of the organization and raise awareness on cancer prevention to a broader audience of patients, advocates and donors. Updates on scientific and medical research advances, recent clinical trials, and interviews with experts in cancer prevention are published on web-based platforms.

IRS990ScheduleI/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0CPI conducts independent scientific peer review on all research applications before making grant award decisions. The Organization requires regular financial and narrative reports for all grant recipients on the use of grant funds and research conducted with the funds. Every grant contract contains specific research milestones and deliverables that are tracked throughout the research process. CPI's reporting requirements include reports on all research results and achievement of scheduled milestones. Annual financial reports must provide details regarding monies spent in comparison to the grant budget. Ongoing research payments are only authorized when milestones have been achieved and satisfactory research reports are received and approved by the scientific team.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Governing body has no committees with authority to act on behalf of the board.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1All members of the governing body receive a copy of the 990 prior to filing, with the opportunity for input and questions.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2The Board of Trustees annually reviews the Conflict of Interest policy and each covered person is annually required to sign a statement that discloses all potential conflicts of interest and affirms that such person: 1.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3The organization complies with IRC Section 6104 in regard to public disclosure. As such, our annual information returns, Conflict of Interest Policy, audited financial reports, and governing documents are available for public inspection upon request.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4New grants made in 2023 totaled $200,000 (see Schedule I). This amount is offset by the return of $146,633.26 from a 2018 grant made to Johns Hopkins University. The grantee was unable to complete their contracted project. Net grant expenses for 2023 were $200,000 - $146,633 = $53,367.
