Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Envisioning a community where all children can read, write, and spell, the project trains and supports volunteer tutors who provide free, long-term, one-to-one instruction to improve the skills of low-income children who need extra help to succeed in the classroom. The project will provide exemplary training and support, based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, for volunteer tutors who work with low-income children struggling to read, write, and spell.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Winter, Summer, and Fall programs for Adults: In an effort to make the training more accessible to a wider variety of volunteers, the project has begun to use a five-day training program requiring the tutors to complete pre-class and post-class work. This program relies more heavily on coaching during and after training. Volunteers were trained using Augustine Literacy Project's research-based methodology to help disadvantaged children attending NC public schools improve literacy skills. The Winter training was a collaboration with the Chatham County Literacy Council. 48 tutors were trained, benefitting at least 96 people. Tutor one child -- change two lives.$0$101,295
High-school Tutor Training Program: During the academic day and year, 16 seniors at Durham Academy, Durham, NC, were trained as Augustine tutors. The students served as tutors for struggling, elementary-school children for most of the academic year. The training for students contains the same instruction as the adult training. It is simply taught in smaller segments over more time. The high-school training was also offered at Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill, NC where 12 students were trained. At least 56 people benefitted from this training.$0$82,878
Tutor support, and Staff, Student, Tutor, Donor, and Board Recognition and Appreciation: A tutor support assistant coordinates several opportunities for tutors to gather and discuss tutoring. These meetings are usually focused on a particular area of tutor training. The tutor support assistant considers the needs and requests of the tutors as she schedules these meetings. These gatherings also provide the tutors with opportunities to mutually support each other, especially by sharing stories of success. An annual dinner is held in the spring, and it includes tutors, staff, board members, invited donors, honored students, and friends of Augustine Literacy Project. It is a glorious celebration of all the good work done by ALP with recognition of many who helped make that good work possible. Many people benefit from this event.$0$2,390
