“MISSION: To improve peoples lives by providing access to electricity and fostering the development of sustainable businesses. Our volunteers offer mentorship and resources to empower less economically developed communities for lasting change. ACHIEVEMENTS:Deployment of new Solar Microgrid - in October 2020, in partnership with a local Zambian NGO, Caritas Monze, a new 5 KW solar-powered energy kiosk with 1 KW solar pump were installed in the community of Kanchomba, Zambia which will be operated by a Youth Group with oversight and support from Caritas. KWH volunteers designed the solar microgrid, held an RFP process with local solar installers, and selected SunRay (Zambia) to install the solar system. KWH volunteers worked with Caritas who, in partnership with the local Cheeba community, identified the business operations that will be supported by the energy providing local jobs, income to the Youth Group and economic advancement for the Kanchomba community. Education - KWH sponsored a Seattle University engineering senior design team to develop a computer application known as the Energy Kiosk Creator (EKC). The team of four students successfully created the EKC which is used by KWH volunteers to design energy kiosks. Outreach - KWH hosts public meetings every two weeks for all volunteers, students, and interested community members to learn from our experiences, learn from other practitioners operating in off-grid energy and/or economic development, and about other related topics. Guest speakers from organizations across the U.S. are routinely invited to speak.”
