Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Providing leadership in studying and creating self-sustaining, secure populations in captivity and in the wild for some of the world's most endangered species.

To provide leadership in studying and creating self-sustaining populations 'ex situ' and 'in situ' of endangered species

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Building capacity in the conservation community -- C2S2 conducted its first training course on the value and uniqueness of large-sized, conservation breeding centers, Conservation Breeding Centers for Wildlife Sustainability. Instructors from various C2S2 member institutions shared insight on wide ranging topics in wildlife conservation breeding and infrastructure, collaborative land use and natural resource management, research tools and techniques, new models for large-scale sustainability, and multiple case studies for diverse species. Significant time was spent outside the classroom exploring the landscapes, facilities, and operations. The Source Population Alliance (SPA) meta-population saw a 40% increase in total animals since the beginning of the year. In January 2015, the SPA Executive Committee met at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center for a business planning meeting, which included discussions and determinations on budgetary needs and funding mechanisms for the program. Based on the survey results and these discussions, the top service/research priority for SPA participants was genomics testing, which will provide participants new information on animal relatedness and the genetic value of individuals. Animals that are over-represented or under-represented in the meta-populations can be identified and appropriate breeding recommendations made. Samples from more than 280 individual animals (44% of the meta-population) across the four species have been provided by participants for genomics testing. Critical knowledge of whooping crane reproductive biology and behavior was generated through studies on mate choice, hormone analysis, and sperm cryopreservation at SCBI and the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, and initial results were presented at the C2S2 Annual Meeting. Cheetah Sustainability Program- Multiple facilities in the Breeding Centers Coalition had double digit cheetah births this year. The Breeding Centers Coalition (BCC) has assembled the most genetically valuable cheetahs from the Species Survival Program (SSP) into the significant animal space of the nine BCC institutions. Six of the latter are Full Members of C2S2. Monthly BCC conference calls were held to promote knowledge sharing and to address breeding challenges.During 2014 and 2015, 18 cheetah cubs were born at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, 16 were born at San Diego Zoo Global, and 13 were born at White Oak Conservation. In 2015, six new breeder cheetahs (two males, four females) contributed offspring to the CSP. The collective BCC now manages more than 160 cheetahs, with an average of four additional cheetahs transferred to each BCC institution over the last two years.$50,000$8,199
