FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Our mission is to bring about the sustained regeneration, improvement and management of the physical environment by developing community-based partnerships to promote environmental, economic and social well-being in the jacksonville, florida area. The organization is a partnership between the city of jacksonville, us national park service, us environmental protection agency and groundwork usa, inc. And is one of 21 such trusts across the country. Groundwork jacksonville is specifically charged with designing and implementing a 100-year old vision of a greenway encircling downtown, including the restoration of hogans and mccoys creeks.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

The green team summer apprenticeship offers stipends for high school students living in jacksonville to help learn about and lead local environmental and healthy community initiatives, conduct research, raise awareness, challenge their peers to do community service, and participate in hands-on improvement projects throughout the city of jacksonville. The program is intended to promote the protection and restoration of jacksonville's critical urban ecological systems, natural resources, and public health by engaging teens in advocacy and service-learning efforts focused on the community's parks, gardens, waterways, and vacant open spaces. The green team program has dual goals - to prepare jacksonville's youth for a lifetime of environmental and healthy community leadership, and to invest in our community's future and capacity to improve its physical environment. This year, the green team summer apprentices designed a cut flower garden for a community member along the s-line rail trail, conducted water sampling, creek and park litter clean-ups, and created two podcasts that highlighted six enslaved individuals from kingsley plantation for the timucuan unit of the national park service.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Groundwork's major urban revitalization efforts are centered on the development of a greenway through jacksonville's urban neighborhoods that surround downtown. The emerald trail master plan, formally adopted by the jacksonville city council, identifies a 30-mile bicycle/pedestrian trail and linear parks. The plan connects 14 urban core neighborhoods to each other, downtown, two urban creeks, the river, 16 schools, 2 colleges, and 21 parks via a trail for bicyclists and pedestrians. The first trail segment is now under design and construction will commence in spring 2021. A new trail segment will be constructed every year with the goal of completing the entire trail network within 10 years. Groundwork jacksonville also continued advancing the design for the ecological restoration of mccoys creek, one of two urban creeks within the emerald trail boundaries. The design is expected to be complete by december 2021.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

The restoration of mccoys creek is part of the larger emerald trail project. The creek has been flooding for decades and its infrastructure was not maintained. Before the implementation of environmental laws, pollutants from industries located on the north side of the creek entered the stream. The project's design takes the creek back to a natural stream, and will reduce flooding, improve water quality, and create habitat for fish and wildlife. Ecologically sensitive recreation will be added, including two large parks which are currently being designed by groundwork jacksonville. Groundwork jacksonville provided the design for the creek's restoration to the city of jacksonville (coj) and has contributed almost a 1m towards the design project, receiving private donations and grants from the national fish and wildlife foundation (nfwf) and the national oceanic and atmospheric administration (noaa). As a result of our design grant with nfwf, coj secured a construction grant for 4.3m for the first phase of construction which will begin in spring 2021. Groundwork jacksonville currently is raising funds to finalize the restoration and recreation design of the western part of the creek known as the branches, and will apply for a federal grant in fall 2021 to secure construction funding.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0GROUNDWORK'S MAJOR URBAN REVITALIZATION EFFORTS ARE CENTERED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GREENWAY THROUGH JACKSONVILLE'S URBAN NEIGHBORHOODS THAT SURROUND DOWNTOWN.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0THE RESTORATION OF MCCOYS CREEK IS PART OF THE LARGER EMERALD TRAIL PROJECT.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1THE GREEN TEAM SUMMER APPRENTICESHIP OFFERS STIPENDS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS LIVING IN JACKSONVILLE TO HELP LEARN ABOUT AND LEAD LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTHY COMMUNITY INITIATIVES, CONDUCT RESEARCH, RAISE AWARENESS, CHALLENGE THEIR PEERS TO DO COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND PARTICIPATE IN HANDS-ON IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE CITY OF JACKSONVILLE.
