Wichita's Littlest Heroes (WLH) exists to provide hope, help, and happiness to families of children ages 0-18 in the Kansas area who are battling different life-threatening medical conditions. WLH strives to accomplish this by being a physical and emotional presence for the whole family. Through partnerships with other nonprofits, individuals, and businesses, we help fill the gaps. We provide education, resources, advocacy, celebration, and free, fun family activities.
The mission of wichita's littlest heroes is to encourage and support families of medically fragile children who are battling life threatening medical conditions or diseases. We strive to be present for the whole family physically and emotionally while connecting them with assistive resources in order to make their journey a little easier, and their load a little lighter. Through partnerships with other non-profits, individuals and businesses, we help fill the gaps; we provide education, advocacy and support, free fun family activities, celebrations and other resources.

| WICHITA'S LITTLEST HEROES (WLH) WAS STARTED IN 2014 BY A MOTHER WHO RECOGNIZED THE NEED AS SHE BATTLED FOR HER OWN SON THROUGH HIS ILLNESS. IN JANUARY OF 2016 WLH BECAME A 501C3 AND ESTABLISHED A BOARD OF DIRECTORS. WLH IS ALL ABOUT HELPING FAMILIES IN THE WICHITA AREA TO "LIVE WELL" WHILE DEALING WITH LIFE-THREATENING MEDICAL CONDITIONS THEIR CHILDREN ARE BATTLING. CURRENTLY WLH PROVIDES PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO 325 FAMILIES WITH 60 DIFFERENT DIAGNOSES, IN WICHITA AND SURROUNDING AREAS. THESE FAMILIES ALL HAVE CHILDREN BATTLING A LIFE-THREATENING MEDICAL ILLNESS. THE GOAL IS TO ENCOURAGE, TO LIFT THEM UP AND TO HELP FAMILIES CARRY THESE HEAVY BURDENS. ONE WAY WE DO IS THIS IS BY HOSTING EVENTS WHERE OUR HERO FAMILIES CAN COME AND ENJOY A FUN-FILLED TIME TAILORED SPECIFICALLY TO THEIR CHILDREN. A TIME WHEN IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU DON'T HAVE HAIR, OR IF YOU HAVE SCARS, OR ARE SPORTING A TRACH OR A G-TUBE. NO ONE IS GOING TO STARE. NO ONE IS GOING TO MAKE FUN. THESE KIDS COME TOGETHER AND HAVE A BALL! IT'S SO MUCH FUN TO ATTEND ONE OF OUR EVENTS. YOU SEE HEALTHY SIBLINGS HELPING OUT, AN ABUNDANCE OF HUGS AND "HIGH-FIVES", HAPPY TEARS, AND SCREAMS OF DELIGHT! EVENTS INCLUDE THE ANNUAL YMCA LUAU AND COOKOUT WITH THE WICHITA WAGONMASTERS AND A TRUNK OR TREAT EVENT AT THE PUMPKIN PATCH. LAST YEAR 30 BUSINESSES OPENED A CAR TRUNK, ALL FILLED WITH GOODIES FOR OUR HEROES. IN DECEMBER, THE 'COCOA AND COOKIES WITH SANTA' EVENT PROVIDED EVERY HERO AND THEIR SIBLINGS A GIFT. LAST YEAR SANTA DISTRIBUTED OVER 400 GIFTS WITH ALMOST 600 PEOPLE ATTENDING, REPRESENTING OVER 200 FAMILIES.IN ADDITION TO WHOLE FAMILY EVENTS, WE SPONSOR TIMES JUST FOR MOM, DAD, OR SIBLINGS. THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT GETTING TOGETHER WITH OTHERS WHO REALLY "GET IT." EVEN THOUGH ALL THE FAMILIES DON'T SHARE THE SAME DIAGNOSIS, THEY OFTEN GO TO THE SAME DOCTORS, ENDURE SOME OF THE SAME TREATMENTS, TRAVEL TO THE SAME OUT OF TOWN HOSPITALS/CLINICS, DEAL WITH THE SAME UNENDING PAPERWORK AND PHONE CALLS AND UNDERSTAND THE STRESS THAT COMES WITH CARING FOR THESE SPECIAL KIDS. OUR VOLUNTEERS MAKE HOSPITAL AND HOME VISITS WHEN OUR HEROES AREN'T FEELING GOOD, OFTEN TAKING WITH THEM A HERO BAG OF FUN GOODIES. NEW HEROES RECEIVE A T-SHIRT AND HERO CAPE TO HELP THEM BE STRONG DURING TREATMENTS AND PROCEDURES. FAMILIES ALSO BENEFIT FROM OUR ORGANIZATIONAL MEMBERSHIPS AT BOTANICA, TANGANYIKA, EXPLORATION PLACE, THE SEDGWICK COUNTY ZOO AND (SOON) THE AVIATION MUSEUM, ALL OF WHICH THEY CAN VISIT WITH THEIR FAMILY AT NO CHARGE! WE BELIEVE THIS STRENGTHENS THE FAMILY BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO HAVE FUN TOGETHER. (SOME SOURCES REPORT THE DIVORCE RATE FOR COUPLES WITH SERIOUSLY SICK KIDS TO BE AS HIGH AS 85% AND WE WANT TO DO ALL WE CAN TO HELP THEM STAY STRONG TOGETHER!)WITHOUT A DOUBT, ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT WICHITA'S LITTLEST HEROES IS THE FRIENDSHIPS FORMED WITH OTHER HERO FAMILIES. TO THAT END, WLH PROVIDES A PRIVATE, MODERATED ONLINE CHAT FORUM FOR FAMILIES. IT IS IN THIS FORUM THEY SHARE THEIR STORIES WITH EACH OTHER, ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER, GIVE AND ASK FOR ADVICE AND JUST GENERALLY "LET THEIR HAIR DOWN." A PERSONAL FAMILY EXAMPLE OF HOW WLH MAKES A DIFFERENCE, ONE FAMILY AT A TIME, OCCURRED AT AN EVENT JUST FOR THE MOMS. THE EVENT IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR MOMS TO GET OUT AND MINGLE WITH OTHER MOMS WHO ARE WALKING SIMILAR JOURNEYS WITH REALLY SICK KIDS. WHILE THERE, ONE MOM CALLED ATTENTION TO HOW THIN "NINA" HAD BECOME. PRIVATELY WHEN ASKED WHY SHE HAD LOST SO MUCH WEIGHT AND IF HER FAMILY WAS STRUGGLING FINANCIALLY, SHE BEGAN TO CRY, SAYING THAT SHE WAS, IN FACT, LOSING WEIGHT BECAUSE WHILE SHE WAS MAKING SURE HER THREE CHILDREN WERE FED AND TRYING TO PAY THE BILLS, SHE WAS GOING WITHOUT, SOMETIMES ONLY EATING ONE NUTRITIOUS MEAL EVERY OTHER DAY! WHEN I GENTLY REMINDED HER OF THE FOOD PANTRIES IN WICHITA SHE SAID SHE KNEW ABOUT THEM BUT SAID, "YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO GET THERE." THIS FAMILY WAS SO SHORT ON MONEY THAT THE HUSBAND HAD BEEN SELLING BLOOD PLASMA IN ORDER TO HAVE GAS MONEY TO GET TO WORK. WITH ALL THE MEDICAL BILLS, THERE JUST ISN'T ENOUGH! THIS FAMILY HAS A VERY SICK DIABETIC CHILD AND THOUGH THEY HAVE INSURANCE, IF THEY GO OVER THEIR INSURANCE ALLOTMENT OF INSULIN IN A MONTH AND HAVE TO BUY EXTRA, IT'S NOW OVER $200 FOR ONE SMALL VIAL. THEIR CHILD'S BLOOD SUGARS HAVE BEEN HIGH AND UNSTABLE LATELY SO LAST MONTH THEY HAD TO BUY 3 VIALS ON THEIR OWN UNTIL INSURANCE ADJUSTS. THAT KILLED THEIR BUDGET BUT THEY DID WHAT THEY HAD TO DO TO FOR THEIR CHILD. A DONOR HAD GIVEN SOME GAS CARDS RECENTLY SO WLH WERE ABLE TO GIVE ONE TO NINA SO SHE CAN GO TO THE FOOD PANTRY. WE'LL BE KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON THIS FAMILY TO BE SURE THEY ARE DOING OKAY. THANK GOODNESS FOR THE MOM WHO NOTICED, AND THE DONOR WHO MADE THE GAS CARD POSSIBLE!DONORS, THROUGH CASH AND SERVICE, HAVE HELPED US PROVIDE WHEELCHAIR RAMPS, REMODEL BATHROOMS TO MAKE THEM WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE, BUY A STOVE FOR A FAMILY, HELP KEEP UTILITIES TURNED ON WHEN FAMILIES HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN PAYING UTILITIES OR PAYING FOR TREATMENT FOR THEIR CHILD, PROVIDE GAS CARDS FOR FAMILIES THAT TRAVEL OUT OF TOWN FOR TREATMENT, AND SO MUCH MORE. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF 2018, WE HAVE LOST 5 HEROES. WE WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THESE FAMILIES AS LONG AS THEY NEED US. ALL "ANGEL HERO" FAMILIES ARE WELCOME AT EVENTS AS LONG AS THEY WANT TO CONTINUE. MANY OF THEM BECOME VETERAN PARENTS WHO HELP OTHER PARENTS NAVIGATE THIS JOURNEY. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF 2018, 68 NEW HERO FAMILIES HAVE BEEN ADDED, PRIMARILY COMING THROUGH REFERRALS FROM THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY OR WORD OF MOUTH FROM MEMBER FAMILIES.WLH IS PRIMARILY SUPPORTED BY A GROUP OF LOCAL BUSINESSMEN WHO BELIEVE IN WHAT WE ARE DOING. THEY HAVE PROVIDED OPERATING EXPENSES FOR THE LAST 18 MONTHS AND WILL CONTINUE BUT ARE GRADUALLY CUTTING BACK TO A NEW LOWER LEVEL AS WLH BECOMES BETTER KNOWN IN THE COMMUNITY. REFERRALS FROM THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY AND OTHER HERO FAMILIES CONTINUES THE GROWTH IN MEMBERSHIP. WLH PARTICIPATES IN AS MANY FUNDRAISING EVENTS AS OUR TIME AND ENERGY ALLOWS. WLH WILL NEED AN ADDITIONAL $50,000 OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS TO CONTINUE PROVIDING THESE PROGRAMS. THE OPERATIONS BUDGET IS RELATIVELY SMALL AS WLH OPERATES WITH ONLY TWO FULL TIME EMPLOYEES AND A HERD OF VOLUNTEERS. OUR ROBUST BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS HANDS ON, AND ON HAND AT MANY OF OUR EVENTS. OUR OFFICES, AFFECTIONATELY CALLED "HERO HEADQUARTERS" ARE IN THE INDEPENDENT LIVING RESOURCE CENTER, AND ALSO HOME TO A MEDICAL SUPPLY SWAP CLOSET, A LENDING LIBRARY, A PLAY ROOM FOR OUR KIDDOS AND A VOLUNTEER WORK SPACE. STAFF, VOLUNTEERS AND MEMBER FAMILIES ASSIST EACH OTHER IN CONNECTING TO RELEVANT COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES. OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED INCLUDE: BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR OVER 40 FAMILIES FACILITATED 37 OF OUR FAMILIES 'CHRISTMAS ADOPTIONS' BY LOCAL BUSINESSES WHO PROVIDED FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY. MODEST FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS, AND AS FINANCES ALLOW, USUALLY FOR UTILITY BILLS AND MEDICAL TRAVEL EXPENSES. 3 BATHROOM REMODELS 1 WHEELCHAIR RAMP 3 EDUCATIONAL PARENT WORKSHOPS 5 MAJOR FAMILY EVENTS 3 DAD EVENTS 3 MOM EVENTS HOST A MEDICAL EXCHANGE CLOSET WISH TRIP FOR A TERMINAL CHILD 700 TRIPS TO THE ZOO 420 TRIPS TO EXPLORATION PLACE 340 TRIPS TO TANGANYIKA MORE THAN 40 GAS CARDS TO FAMILIES GOING OUT OF TOWN FOR MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS 4 HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS FOR FAMILIES OUT OF TOWN FOR MED APPOINTMENTS WHO COULDN'T STAY AT RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE 400 CHRISTMAS GIFTS AT OUR CHRISTMAS PARTY 350 BIRTHDAY CARDS 150 SUPERHERO CAPES FOR NEW MEMBERS 50 HOSPITAL BAGS FOR KIDS IN THE HOSPITAL AND SO MUCH MORE SO NO FAMILY FIGHTS ALONE!THE WLH WEBSITE IS WWW.WICHITASLITTLESTHEROES.COM IN ADDITION TO A PUBLIC FACEBOOK PAGE. | $0 | $79,374 |
