“Sunrise project serves douglas county by providing space and opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to build an equitable community through education, good food, and social connection.”

“Sunrise free food pantry: sunrise projects front porch served as a 24/7 no-questions-asked food pantry. The shelves and fridge on our porch are mostly stocked by community members who drop off food throughout the day. Sunrise project rescues food on the weekend from a local grocery store and stocks an after school snack shelf for youth. Community center: sunrise project provides two community meals a month, serving 400+ with no questions asked. Meals are served dine-in, to-go and by delivery. Sunday cafes are held weekly where people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy drinks, snacks and social connection at no charge.”

“Lawrence fruit tree project: through lftp, sunrise project stewards lawrence community orchard, located in east lawrence. Since 2012 this space has provided the lawrence community with a free food park planted with perennial trees and plants that provide food. In addition, lftp plants fruit trees in public spaces and offers fruit tree workshops. Sunrise community garden: unlike many community gardens in our community, sunrise garden is a free food garden open to all for harvest and enjoyment. We do not rent out plots or reserve the harvest for volunteers. We recognize that there are many barriers to gardening: time, skill, knowledge, and access to land. Our garden addresses those barriers by providing a garden space that is open to all.”

“Youth programming: sunrise project offers youth internships to learn job skills, experience leadership and engage in community building. In addition, local schools bring students to sunrise for field trips and experiential learning.”
