Profile
Over the past fifty years our south florida ocean habitat and reefs have been degraded by a variety of destructive influences including population growth, climate change, pollution, invasive exotic species and lack of education on and appreciation for the value of our marine resources. The andrew "red" harris foundation will enhance, augment and, in some cases, replace the natural reefs which are the key element in our local marine habitat. Specially designed concrete structures have been developed to create a more natural artificial reef ecosystem than sunken ships and construction debris provide. These uniquely designed structures will provide a marine life living laboratory for research and educational purposes. The deployment of these structures is being done in partnership with the palm beach county department of environmental resource management, the fish and wildlife commission, the town of jupiter and others. The first 40 structures were placed on the ocean floor in the summer

The andrew red harris foundation will create large new artificial reefs in northern palm beach county in depths appropriate for scuba divers and fishermen and smaller reefs in depths appropriate for snorkelers and for fishermen catching bait. We will create vibrant new habitats that will take pressure off our natural reefs, promote the rebound of our local marine environment and improve our local economy.

The deployment of these structures is being done in partnership with the palm beach county department of environmental resource management, the fish and wildlife commission, the town of jupiter and others. The first 40 structures were placed on the ocean floor in the summer of 2015. An additional 100 unit deployment took place in 2016 and 134 more modules along with 1,000 tons of boulders in 2017. 2018 saw 32 additional coral heads and 2 250 ton boulder reefs depoyed. In 2019 the foundation placed 280 3 ton hollow boulders and 3 220 ton boulder reefs off of juno beach in 80 feet of water. During 2020 the foundation saw multiple depoyments of boulders to construct 2 20 foot tall reefs as well as a 26 foot tall reef off the jupiter inlet. These deployments have helped grow the jupiter reef from 1,800 feet to 3,300 feet during 2020. In 2021 and 2022 the foundation continued its mission with multiple deployments of concrete culverts off the coast of jupiter. 2023 saw the deployment of over 1,000 tons of boulders in palm beach county making two new reefs off of juno beach including the derek beckel memorial reef. The hard work of the foundation was also recognized by palm beach county and it's commissioners with the recognition that december 10th now be marked as andrew "red" harris artificial reef day. Successive years will see continued growth in our projects and partnerships to deploy these uniquely designed concrete structures and expand marine life. The artificial reefs we build will provide an opportunity for florida atlantic university, indian river sate university, nova southeastern university, the jupiter community high school environmental academy and other educational institutions to study marine life at a specific site which will be mapped for access for educational purposes. We are working with a local author who has published multiple books featuring andrew "red" harris promoting marine environmentalism to students from kindergarten to 5th grade. During 2018 and 2019 more than 55,000 books were donated to third grade classrooms around florida. As the reefs develop we will provide maps, videos and photographs of the developing marine growth and various inhabitants of the reef. These maps will be available to the educational institutions, tourism groups, and the general public.”

| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | OVER THE PAST FIFTY YEARS OUR SOUTH FLORIDA OCEAN HABITAT AND REEFS HAVE BEEN DEGRADED BY A VARIETY OF DESTRUCTIVE INFLUENCES INCLUDING POPULATION GROWTH, CLIMATE CHANGE, POLLUTION, INVASIVE EXOTIC SPECIES AND LACK OF EDUCATION ON AND APPRECIATION FOR THE VALUE OF OUR MARINE RESOURCES. THESE MAPS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, TOURISM GROUPS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. |
