“Upon preparation of the federal form 990 by an independent accounting firm, the executive director sends the draft version of the federal form 990 to the board of directors, both electronically and in hard copy, for review prior to filing. Any questions or concerns from the board of directors are noted in writing, and 1,000 days' management team ensures that changes are incorporated into the form 990 as appropriate. The final version of the form 990 is distributed to the board of directors and then filed with the internal revenue service.”
“Each member of the 1,000 days board of directors and the executive director annually sign a statement which affirms such person a) has received a copy of the conflict of interest policy, b) has read and understands the policy, c) has agreed to comply with the policy, and d) understands 1,000 days is a charitable organization and in order to maintain its federal tax exemption, it must engage primarily in activities which accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes. If a conflict of interest does arise with a board member or the executive director, he/she shall be recused from the meeting while the determination of the conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. The remaining board members shall decide if a conflict of interest does exists and if so: a) whether 1,000 days can obtain a more advantageous arrangement from a person or entity that would not give rise to a conflict of interest, or b) whether the transaction or arrangement is in 1,000 days' best interest. The board shall make its decision by a majority vote as to whether to enter into the transaction or arrangement. If the governing board has cause to believe a member has failed to disclose actual or possible conflicts of interest, it shall afford the member an opportunity to explain the alleged failure to disclose. If, after hearing the member's response and after making further investigation as warranted by the circumstances, the governing board or committee determines the member has failed to disclose an actual or possible conflict of interest, it shall take appropriate disciplinary and corrective action.”
“The board of directors reviews and approves the compensation of the executive director and the key employees, on an annual basis. This includes an annual evaluation of the executive director on his/her performance, as well as his/her input on matters of performance. In reviewing and approving the compensation for the executive director, the board of directors gathers comparability data, specifically data that documents compensation levels and benefits for similarly qualified individuals in comparable positions at similar organizations with respect to mission, size, annual budget and location. This process is led by the board chair, who is a volunteer and not compensated by 1,000 days and operates independently without undue influence from the executive director or any other key employee. To approve the compensation for the executive director (and other key employees) the board of directors documents how it reached its decisions, including the data on which it relied, in minutes of the meeting during which the compensation was approved.”
“1,000 days makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | GLOBAL ADVOCACY - 1,000 DAYS WORKS TO BUILD GREATER POLITICAL COMMITMENT TO INCREASE ACTION AND INVESTMENT IN MATERNAL AND YOUNG CHILD NUTRITION GLOBALLY. IN 2016, 1,000 DAYS ADVOCATED FOR INCREASED FUNDING FOR NUTRITION, WORKED TO MAKE MATERNAL AND CHILD NUTRITION A POLICY PRIORITY, AND ALIGNED AND MOBILIZED ADVOCATES, THOUGHT-LEADERS, POLICYMAKERS AND ITS NETWORK OF PARTNERS TO IMPROVE NUTRITION FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD. 1,000 DAYS LED AND COORDINATED THE INTERNATIONAL COALITION ON ADVOCACY FOR NUTRITION (ICAN)--A DIVERSE GLOBAL NETWORK OF MORE THAN 40 ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TOGETHER TO ENCOURAGE GREATER INVESTMENT IN NUTRITION. THROUGH REGULAR CONVENINGS OF THE 1,000 DAYS ADVOCACY WORKING GROUP AND THE U.S. ICAN GROUP, 1,000 DAYS ENGAGED PARTNERS, AND AGENCY AND CONGRESSIONAL STAFF ON THE CRITICAL NEED TO INVEST MORE AND BETTER IN MATERNAL AND YOUNG CHILD NUTRITION. BASED ON 1,000 DAYS' ASSESSMENT, THERE HAS BEEN A MARKED INCREASE IN U.S. LAWMAKERS' REFERENCES TO AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE 1,000 DAY WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY, THE ECONOMIC COST OF MALNUTRITION, AND THE NEED TO ALIGN THE USG'S NUTRITION STRATEGY WITH OTHER GLOBAL HEALTH AND FOOD SECURITY STRATEGIES. AS A COMPLEMENT TO ITS EDUCATION OF U.S. POLICYMAKERS, 1,000 DAYS CULTIVATED INFLUENTIAL MEMBERS OF THE BUSINESS, FAITH AND ACADEMIC COMMUNITIES AND DREW ON POPULAR INFLUENCERS SUCH AS OLYMPIC ATHLETES TO CHAMPION THIS ISSUE WITH US POLICY-MAKERS. AHEAD OF THE 2016 OLYMPICS, 1,000 DAYS SENT A LETTER SIGNED BY OVER 100 ATHLETES TO PRESIDENT OBAMA IN SUPPORT OF ALL CHILDREN RECEIVING A FAIR START TO LIFE WITH GOOD NUTRITION. MOREOVER, 1,000 DAYS ADVOCATED FOR AND SPEARHEADED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A ROADMAP TO ACHIEVE THE SIX WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY (WHA) GLOBAL NUTRITION TARGETS. WORKING ALONGSIDE THE WORLD BANK, RESULTS FOR DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE (R4D), THE BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION AND THE CHILDREN INVESTMENT FUND FOUNDATION (CIFF), 1,000 DAYS LAUNCHED A GROUNDBREAKING STUDY PROVIDING AN INVESTMENT FRAMEWORK FOR HOW THE WORLD CAN ACCELERATE PROGRESS AGAINST MALNUTRITION. GLOBAL ADVOCATES HAVE INCORPORATED THIS ANALYSIS INTO THE CALL FOR GREATER RESOURCES FOR NUTRITION, AND 1,000 DAYS HAS WORKED CLOSELY WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TO TAILOR THE MATERIALS FOR ADVOCATES WORKING IN STRATEGIC DONOR MARKETS AND HIGH-BURDEN COUNTRIES. 1,000 DAYS ALSO LED EFFORTS TO GALVANIZE GREATER SUPPORT FOR BREASTFEEDING AS AN INVESTMENT IN CHILD SURVIVAL AND DEVELOPMENT. IN PARTICULAR, 1,000 DAYS WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) AND UNICEF TO INCREASE INVESTMENTS IN PROGRAMS AND POLICIES TO PROMOTE, PROTECT AND SUPPORT BREASTFEEDING. 1,000 DAYS USED ITS COMMUNICATIONS PLATFORMS, INCLUDING WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS, TO EDUCATE AND MOBILIZE THE PUBLIC AROUND ISSUE OF MATERNAL AND EARLY CHILD NUTRITION. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | DOMESTIC ADVOCACY - IN 2016, 1,000 DAYS WORKED TO GALVANIZE MUCH-NEEDED ACTION TO ADDRESS INEQUITIES IN MATERNAL AND YOUNG CHILD HEALTH AND NUTRITION IN THE U.S. BY DEVELOPING A COMPREHENSIVE PICTURE OF MATERNAL AND YOUNG CHILD NUTRITION IN THE U.S., ENGAGING KEY STAKEHOLDER GROUPS AND EXPERTS, AND BUILDING A PUBLIC CONSTITUENCY FOR MATERNAL AND YOUNG CHILD NUTRITION. IN PARTICULAR, 1,000 DAYS COMPLETED A FAR-REACHING REVIEW OF AVAILABLE DATA AND RESEARCH ON MATERNAL, INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD HEALTH AND NUTRITION IN THE U.S. AND SYNTHESIZED THE EVIDENCE INTO A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND REPORT ON THE NUTRITIONAL HEALTH OF AMERICA'S MOTHERS, INFANTS AND TODDLERS-THE FIRST 1,000 DAYS: NOURISHING AMERICA'S FUTURE. THE REPORT LAYS OUT THE SCIENCE THAT SHOWS THE CRITICAL IMPORTANCE OF NUTRITION DURING THE 1,000 DAYS BETWEEN A WOMAN'S PREGNANCY AND HER CHILD'S SECOND BIRTHDAY, DESCRIBES THE STATE OF NUTRITION DURING THE FIRST 1,000 DAYS IN THE U.S., AND PROVIDES AN AMBITIOUS YET ACHIEVABLE AGENDA FOR CHANGE. 1,000 DAYS LAUNCHED THE REPORT IN SEPTEMBER 2016 ON CAPITOL HILL AND HAS DISSEMINATED THE FINDINGS BROADLY. IN ADDITION, 1,000 DAYS CONDUCTED QUALITATIVE RESEARCH WITH LOW-INCOME MOTHERS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT AND HOW YOUNG CHILDREN ARE FED AND THE BARRIERS WOMEN FACE IN PROVIDING THEIR CHILDREN WITH GOOD NUTRITION. THE QUALITATIVE RESEARCH LIFTED UP THE VOICES OF MOTHERS AND HIGHLIGHTED THEIR CHALLENGES IN NOURISHING THEMSELVES AND THEIR CHILDREN. BOTH THE REPORT AND THE RESEARCH SERVE TO PAINT A CLEAR AND COMPELLING PICTURE OF THE FIRST 1,000 DAYS FOR AMERICA'S FAMILIES, ULTIMATELY MAKING THE CASE FOR WHY NUTRITION IS AN ESSENTIAL INVESTMENT IN EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT AND HEALTH. BY BUILDING A COMMON UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEM OF POOR NUTRITION IN AMERICA - WHO IT AFFECTS AND WHY IT MATTERS - 1,000 DAYS HAS STARTED TO ALIGN DIVERSE GROUPS AROUND A SHARED AGENDA FOR ACTION TO IMPROVE NUTRITION FOR AMERICA'S MOTHERS, INFANTS AND TODDLERS. IN 2016, 1,000 DAYS ALSO GREW A COMMUNITY OF ACTIVISTS AROUND KEY ISSUES, SUCH AS A NATIONAL PAID FAMILY LEAVE POLICY, INCREASED SUPPORT FOR FEDERAL NUTRITION PROGRAMS (SPECIFICALLY THE WIC PROGRAM) AND AN END TO INFANT FORMULA PROMOTION IN AMERICAN HOSPITALS. 1,000 DAYS GENERATED MORE THAN 350,000 ACTIONS TO IMPROVE NUTRITION, GREW A FACEBOOK COMMUNITY OF OVER 135,000 PEOPLE, AND REACHED MORE THAN 13.7 MILLION PEOPLE WITH NUTRITION INFORMATION. |
