The fhsaa is currently the only body recognized by the florida house and senate for directing and controlling interscholastic high school athletics. The ssac is attempting to achieve recognition by the florida legislature, so that its student-athletes do not feel "left out" it is rare that the student-athletes from the ssac member schools will be looked at closely by college scouts from large florida colleges and universities who are members of the southeastern conference ("sec"), atlantic coast conference ("acc") and other well-known universities from around the country. Similar to athletes who attend division iii ncaa colleges as well as community colleges, the ssac athletes generally do not receive athletic scholarships after high school for athletic performance. In fact, many of the schools they will attend do not even have athletic scholarships. Instead, the ssac attempts to promote both the academic and athletic achievements of what are truly "student athletes", and their needs are very different from the large public high schools, where some of the athletes "major" in football, basketball or the other popular sports, rather than achieving high or significant academic performance in high school.
