Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Pt III, Line 31

Program Service Accomplishments continued; Mitchell and Madison counties. After identifying interested elementary, middle and high schools, we created new garden 'learning labs' with the students at those schools. Consequently, all of the participating schools also took part in our September Monarch Class-a 4 week study that gives students hands-on opportunities to raise monarchs, play games, create art and participate in citizen science!

Pt III, Line 31

Success!all in all, we helped create over 15 new habitats throughout the region. Keep in mind, that was habitat that did not exist at the beginning of 2015. This past fall, however, the monarchs rewarded our efforts by laying eggs in almost all the new gardens we planted. We gathered eggs and helped students raise them in over 30 classrooms. When we teach the students that only 1% of monarchs make it to adulthood in nature, the kids really take pride in knowing that they 'helped a monarch'. And we take pride in knowing that we have given them a chance to bond with one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring parts of nature, right in their own classroom. As richard louv pointed out in his now classic "last child in the woods," nature deficit disorder is rampant, and opportunities to care about nature and witness its miracles is something that is becoming increasingly rare in our tech-driven world, yet it's one of the most important things we can do for this next generation. We take this part of our mission very seriously ... But, we have a lot of fun in the process!

Pt III, Line 31

Rosalynn carter butterfly trailall the us fish and wildlife service plantings we created this year have the unique distinction of being the premiere plantings of the rosalynn carter butterfly trail (rcbt) in nc thanks to a partnership forged between the usfw and the rcbt. The trail was established in 2013 in an effort to support former first lady, rosalynn carter's vision of milkweed gardens strung across the landscape from plains, georgia to washington, dc. Since then mrs. Carter's vision has expanded to include gardens all over the country and even japan! Monarch rescue was also honored to have the opportunity to present at the rcbt plains chautauqua last october, alongside monarch celebrities like chip taylor of monarch watch and dr. Jaap de roode of uga's monarch health project.

Pt III, Line 31

Monarch day at the nc arboretum!september 25, 2016on a glorious saturday in september, complete with our characteristic carolina blue skies overhead, monarch rescue co-hosted the first annual monarch day with the nc arboretum. This family-fun event featured two presentations by nina veteto (founder, monarch rescue) and a public tagging event with audience participation, as well as numerous craft tables for kids (monarch kites, seed-bombs, face painting, etc), and locally grown milkweed for sale. In addition, susan meyers of monarchs across georgia was also there with a wealth of information and caterpillars at all stages of development. Dubbed by the arboretum as their "most successful educational event ever," you can be sure we will be making it happen again next year with new and exciting elements!

Pt III, Line 31

Other community projectslast february, thanks to the inspired efforts of mayor mike sobol, the town of black mountain passed an addendum encouraging its township to plant milkweed wherever possible in an effort to encourage the once prolific migration-one that many older residents still recall longingly. Monarch rescue worked with several local facilities to establish habitat trying in earnest to revive those fading memories. The black mountain home for children and the black mountain neuro-medical treatment center were two such places. At the home for children, we worked closely with the eco-club, who absolutely fell in love with the monarchs they raised and tagged. Pictured above are the students from the eco-club holding up the paper butterfly they made to send to mexico through journey north's symbolic migration.

Pt III, Line 31

One of our most rewarding projects of the year involved planting new habitat at the City of Asheville's Altamont Apartments and Bartlett Arms, both located in downtown Asheville. The residents were so excited to have beautiful new gardens in their neighborhood and were thrilled to learn about the monarch's life cycle and migration. We took eggs to several of the residents who wanted to raise and tag their own butterflies and all were deeply moved by the process.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2ROSALYNN CARTER BUTTERFLY TRAILALL THE US FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE PLANTINGS WE CREATED THIS YEAR HAVE THE UNIQUE DISTINCTION OF BEING THE PREMIERE PLANTINGS OF THE ROSALYNN CARTER BUTTERFLY TRAIL (RCBT) IN NC THANKS TO A PARTNERSHIP FORGED BETWEEN THE USFW AND THE RCBT.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3MONARCH DAY AT THE NC ARBORETUM!SEPTEMBER 25, 2016ON A GLORIOUS SATURDAY IN SEPTEMBER, COMPLETE WITH OUR CHARACTERISTIC CAROLINA BLUE SKIES OVERHEAD, MONARCH RESCUE CO-HOSTED THE FIRST ANNUAL MONARCH DAY WITH THE NC ARBORETUM.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4OTHER COMMUNITY PROJECTSLAST FEBRUARY, THANKS TO THE INSPIRED EFFORTS OF MAYOR MIKE SOBOL, THE TOWN OF BLACK MOUNTAIN PASSED AN ADDENDUM ENCOURAGING ITS TOWNSHIP TO PLANT MILKWEED WHEREVER POSSIBLE IN AN EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE THE ONCE PROLIFIC MIGRATION-ONE THAT MANY OLDER RESIDENTS STILL RECALL LONGINGLY.
