Mission

At the intersection of racial equity and climate resilience, the boston food forest coalition, a nonprofit community land trust, is a community of neighbors transforming vacant lots into public edible parks placed into permanent community control and ownership. Together, we are building resilience in boston through more equitable access to healthy green space and greater connection to each other and the natural world.

Transformed vacant lots into food forest public parks across the city of boston, prioritizing neighborhoods where there is inequitable access to parkland and its critical benefits. Offering food forest maintenance, gardening, and community engagement workshops.

The finance committee, with special emphasis on the executive director, associate director, and director of finance, are to be held responsible for ensuring compliance. Each individual is responsible for noting if any potential vendors are related to bffc staff or board members, or if conducting business with such vendors could benefit bffc staff or board members.

Bffc strives to maintain competitive salaries for all staff members. The executive director's compensation is based upon the salaries of other executive directors in the greater boston area with similar levels of staffing and funding. Those numbers, in conjunction with the finance committee's analysis of how salary levels will affect the financial sustainability of bffc, then produces a proposal for the salary of the executive director. The salary proposal is then presented, discussed, possibly modified, and ultimately approved or rejected by the board of directors.

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The organization, incorporated under chapter 180 of the massachusetts general laws as a tax-exempt entity, has been granted tax-exempt status under internal revenue code (irc) section 501(c)(3) and is classified as other than a private foundation as defined by section 509(a) of the irc. Therefore, it is generally exempt from federal and state income taxes except for tax on unrelated business income. Asc 740-10, "income taxes," requires the organization to evaluate and disclose tax positions that could have an effect on the organization's financial statements. The organization reports its activities to the internal revenue service and to the commonwealth of massachusetts on an annual basis. These informational returns are generally subject to audit and review by the governmental agencies for a period of three years after filing. Substantially all of the organization's income, expenditures and activities relate to its exempt purpose, therefore, management has determined that the organization is not subject to unrelated business income taxes and will continue to qualify as a tax-exempt not-for-profit entity.
