Our mission is to connect urban youth with wilderness education experiences that foster personal growth..We further our purposes by conducting the following two outdoor education program activities: .1. Our flagship program model empowers urban youth through mentorship by community members and guides using nature as a platform for restoration, bonding, and transformation. We engage with youth throughout middle school. We collaborate with agencies that do gardening to link students to nature in a hands on manner. We then help these youth make a farm to forest connection. The natural restoration and bonding that takes place on the hikes creates an interest the environment and provides personal growth and transformation. .2. For our customized wilderness outings program, we work with charitable and other organizations to provide reduced-cost excursions for their youth or clientele.

| Last year, WYLD served 78 unduplicated (one time) participants throughout the year. For duplicated participants, we had 308 in all our programs, including 25 youth in our summer expeditions, 106 (10 a week average) in our afterschool program, and 177 participants on our hikes. We ran 26 total courses over 37 course/program days (hikes and after-school days). We created 492 participant program days (the number of duplicated participants multiplied by days on course (trips/after-school)). .Other accomplishments are as follows:.1) Launched a once a week afterschool at Carver Middle School from Jan. '15 - June '15 that served 10 students a week and also took the students on day hikes.2) Prepared for a January 2016 in-school garden program at Carver to serve 65 students a week. 3) Developed a relationship with a recovery program within the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration and began to take the vets out on hikes. 4) Established Vendor Status with Los Angeles Unified School District, in order to work directly on campuses. 5) Retained 18 students in our program from the previous year. 6) Took 12 returning students to Mono Lake Association for 5 days. 7) Partnered with an charter school agency for our first customized program engagement.8) Successfully launched our first backcountry trip with 10 students and 3 staff to Golden Trout Wilderness in the Sierras.Below are a few testimonials we received from our backcountry trip in the Sierras:."...how I'll always remember seeing the sky lift up by shooting stars and the madre luna (mother moon)." - Antonio "...circling around the campfire sharing...the feels. Yo...this is getting pretty personal."- Bernice"...the way this trip has made me realize that perhaps my mentality or perspective on certain aspects of my life should change." - Melissa10th grader Michele journaled, "I'm scared that I won't be able to climb and walk with the gear, but putting that aside, I'm really excited to connect with Mother Nature." | $0 | $37,955 |
