Spring Forward: This Spring, U.S. Climate Plan, Energy Action Coalition, and Gamechanger Labs collaborated to host 12 statewide summits under the banner of #SpringForward to bring together young leaders, build off the Paris moment in this critical year for US climate action, and seed short- and long- term strategies for growing youth-led movement for government action towards climate justice at a local, state, and national level. These #SpringForward State Strategy summits brought together hundreds of top leaders already engaging in climate work on their campuses and in their communities and provided them with the time and space to think big. What could we accomplish if we built coordinated statewide networks? What could we do if we built sustainable movements? How can we move forward impactful short-term campaigns that are building power as part of a long-term strategy? Participants described the summits using words such as "empowering", "catalytic", and "transformative". Outcomes included deepened relationships, new statewide campaigns, trained leaders, clarified visions and strategies, the beginning of infrastructure for new statewide networks and organizations, and action plans for the remainder of the year. Statewide Organizing Summit: This summer, U.S. Climate Plan and the Virginia Student Environmental Coalition hosted the first ever summit on youth-led statewide movement-building for climate justice. The "Youth Climate Justice Statewide Organizing Summit" (#ClimateSOS) took place from August 6th through 8th in Charlottesville, Virginia and brought together 45 top leaders from 11 key states around the country. The summit consisted of a weekend of training, relationship building, learning, and strategizing to strengthen youth organizing to build public demand for government action towards climate justice. One of the goals of the summit was to form an ongoing "community of practice" to support continued learning, connection, strategizing on how to build popular movements for action towards climate justice in our states and nationaly. This community of practice and new national network has since launched and has been having regular monthly calls to do just that. Many states have integrated the learnings from the summit into their work back home. Leaders from Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, and New Hampshire all used the learnings and organizing frameworks introduced at the summit to inform their statewide strategy developments. In New Hampshire, Florida, Minnesota, North Carolina, and New York, leaders hatched plans to create new statewide networks, connecting Leaders from across their states and uniting them to build public demand for action from their governments. U.S. Climate Plan supported these efforts through coaching, mentorship, training, facilitation of strategy retreats, amplification of work nationally through the media and online, providing online infrastructure, providing fiscal sponsorship to state-level groups who need it, and moderating and maintaining the community of practice. We are also making plans for further in-person and online gatherings and trainings and working with leaders in each state to determine best how to move the work forward state-by-state. Frontloading: U.S. Climate Plan helped to convene a series of retreats of 12 leaders of the national youth climate movement to determine a new long-term strategic program to be launched in 2017.
