Profile
The BioPontis Alliance Rare Disease (BARD) Foundation is a non profit corporation that brings rare disease patient advocacy organizations, academic research centers, contract research companies, and the biomedical industry under a novel nonprofit innovation joint venture (iJV) structure. The iJV is designed to perform the early scientific development of potential cures for rare diseases, with the necessary rigor and procedures to meet the regulatory approvals that are required to bring therapies and diagnostic tests to patients suffering from rare diseases. .The BARD Foundation addresses the gap where many promising research ideas that could be the seed of treatments for rare diseases stall - when patient advocates and academic researchers encounter a lack of the requisite medical product development know-how and financing pathway to advance their ideas into actual therapies and diagnostic tests.

“The biopontis alliance rare disease foundation is a nonprofit corporation that brings together rare disease patient advocacy organizations, academic research centers, contract research companies, and the biomedical industry to translate research into potential treatments by focusing on the earliest stages of product development.”
“Alliances and partnerships -- during 2019, the biopontis alliance organization mainly worked on the realization of the promise of our first strategic partnership, which is the project with vib (flemish institute for biotechnology, belgium) and the university of antwerp, belgium on a clinical variant of the peripheral neuropathy charcot-marie- tooth disease. Together with our partners, we have worked on the identification of compounds from a large compound bank, owned by our partners, through assay development and high-throughput screening techniques. That work led to several 'hits', in other words, several compounds that may, after further validation and optimization, potentially be used for the development of a therapy. This positive development not only validates the overall approach taken by the biopontis alliance, but also provides a promising platform for further work towards a potential therapy for the indicated rare disease. We also worked with our partners on the definition of the next steps needed towards therapy development.”

| IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt | 0 | BIOPONTIS ALLIANCE RARE DISAEASE FOUNDATION INC., FOUNDED IN EARLY 2014 AND OPERATIONAL SINCE 2015, COMPLETED ITS FIFTH YEAR AT THE END OF 2018. OVER THE COURSE OF ITS FIRST FIVE YEARS, THE ORGANIZATION RECEIVED 10% OF ITS FUNDING FROM "PUBLIC SUPPORT" AS DEFINED BY SCHEDULE A OF FORM 990, AND THE REMAINDER FROM GIFTS BY THREE FOUNDATIONS. THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, WHICH GOVERNS THE ORGANIZATION, IS COMPRISED OF SCIENTISTS, PATIENTS' ORGANIZATION REPRESENTATIVES, MEDICAL DOCTORS, AND OTHERS WITHIN THE FIELD OF LIFE SCIENCES WHO ARE WORKING TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY CONCERNING THERAPY DEVELOPMENT FOR NEUROLOGICAL RARE DISEASES FOR WHICH NO APPROVED THERAPY EXISTS. WORLDWIDE AND TAKEN TOGETHER, RARE DISEASES REPRESENT A MEDICAL NEED THAT IS EQUAL TO THAT OF DIABETES AND MORE THAN TWICE THAT OF CANCER AND AIDS COMBINED. IT IS NOTEWORTHY THAT THE ORGANIZATION PUBLISHES EDUCATIONAL AND RESEARCH FINDINGS FOR USE BY RARE DISEASE PATIENTS' ORGANIZATIONS AND THE BROADER RARE DISEASE RESEARCH COMMUNITY. IN ADDITION, ORGANIZATION LEADERS HAVE PUBLISHED PAPERS IN TOP SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS AND SPOKEN AT GLOBAL CONFERENCES, UNDERSCORING THE ORGANIZATION'S RESEARCH-RELATED ACTIVITIES. DURING ITS FIRST YEARS, THE ORGANIZATION FOCUSED THE SCOPE OF ITS SOLICITATION ON FOUNDATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS THAT WERE MOST LIKELY TO PROVIDE SEED MONEY IN AN AMOUNT SUFFICIENT TO CONTINUE ITS CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES AND EXPAND ITS SOLICITATIONS PROGRAM. HOWEVER, WHILE THE MISSION OF THE ORGANIZATION IS SUPPORTED BY ALL, AND THE ORGANIZATION'S FIRST PROJECT HAS PROVEN SUCCESSFUL, SUFFICIENT FUNDRAISING FOR ADDITIONAL PROJECTS PROVED TO BE A MORE COMPLEX AND DIFFICULT EXERCISE THAN ANTICIPATED, REFLECTING THE COMPLEXITY OF THE ORGANIZATION'S MESSAGE TO ITS FUNDRAISING AUDIENCES. THEREFORE, THE BOARD RESOLVED TO DISSOLVE THE ORGANIZATION ON MAY 14, 2020. |
