“Organizations Mission:Hola Cultura creates and diseminates empowering alternative narratives that couterbalance negative stereotypes and serves as a cultural translator to the wider community. Central to our mission is professional development and education. Through storytelling, research and dialogue, we provide learning opportunities and educate the public about the values of Hispanic arts and humanities. The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities general operating support was instrumental in allowing Hola Cultura to provide professional training for 60 teenagers and young adult interns, fellows and volunteers in our Storytelling Program for Experiential Learning, as well as adult contributors to our Spanish Literary Program. Volunteers and interns receive professional development training, professional editing and publication services provided by HC staff, resulting in the production and publication of 115 interviews and articles and 14 podcast episodes in English and Spanish and weekly event listings featuring and promoting a total of more than 450 Washington-area Latinx artists, writers and other creative leaders. The interviews were also published on the organizations website, www.holacultura.com, and shared via social media. Our 2024 productions also included two podcast series and a special research project. The D.C. Northeastern University provided funding to Hola Cultura to produce audio stories and an accompanying webpage as part of its Sidewalk Stories oral history project in East Boston, Massachusetts. As part of the work, Hola Cultura reviewed dozens of oral history interviews, historic photos, maps and other archival data, developed scripts and created audio programs including short clips from several interviews, and designed a webpage including the audio recordings, photographs and short texts. In 2025, this work will be presented to the community at a free public event and the audio stories will be installed at outdoor locations in East Boston for the public to access by cell phone using QR codes.”
