Mission

Improve long-term health and wellness in low-income communities by creating a network of educational support groups and enhancing access to healthy, unprocessed foods.

Mission: improve long-term health and wellness in low-income communities by creating a network of educational support groups and enhancing access to healthy, unprocessed foods. Significant activities: a groceryship is a scholarship for groceries. Our six month program consists of weekly 2 hour meetings where we provide families with access to healthy foods, and a comprehensive program of education and support to empower them to increase health by incorporating more of these nutritious foods into their diets. Families who are awarded groceryships receive weekly support on three levels: (1) educational thorough curriculum focused on nutrition, healthy cooking and shopping skills; (2) economic fresh produce deliveries / gift cards provide access and exposure to nutritious, whole foods; (3) building community support group meetings focused on emotional eating, overcoming food addiction, and building a support network. In 2015, groceryships provided 10 groups to 100 families.

Program service accomplishments: during 2015, groceryships expanded from 2 groups completed during 2014 to 10 groups. That means the organizations impact grew from 20 families served in 2014 to 100 families served in 2015. In addition, the number of group leaders grew from 2 to 12, including 4 groceryships graduates, and the number of program volunteers grew from 3 to 15. During 2015, groceryships coordinated the delivery of over 10,000 lbs. Of fresh produce directly to participating families, and provided an additional approximately 30,000 of grocery scholarships. In addition, participants demonstrated positive improvements on a range of physical / health metrics and emotional / well-being surveys.
