Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Community Project is building a community driven K-8 school with vegetable gardens, its own brick producing workshop, bamboo propagation nursery and community facilities for 1000 children and their families in Debre Birhan, Ethiopia. We work in partnership with the community, the local government, Debre Birhan University, Debre Birhan Polytechnic College, 3 Engineers Without Borders teams, Architects Without Borders, and the Ethiopian Mission at the United Nations. Our work is to empower the community with support for better education, sanitation, and economic development for their families.

We are building a kindergarten through 8th grade model school for 1000 children community center and classroom vegetable gardens in an economically disadvantaged area of Ethiopia. All structures are community-built with technical expertise donated by Engineers and Architects Without Borders. As part of the holistic educational project: 1. We built composting toilets to recycle waste back to the nutrient soil. 2. Developed a Bamboo Propagation Nursery to add economic benefit to the region training young farmers in planting this renewable crop used as construction material furniture making and biofuel. The young shoots are also used as a food source. 3. Our demonstration Apple Orchard is training local farmers to plant this highly nutritious and economic fruit not yet commercially available in our highland region. As part of enlarging the educational experience we promote and sponsor educational training for our teachers and have initiated the first elementary STEM program.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Composting Toilet Construction: We are building composting toilets to recycle waste back to the nutrient poor soil. This is a seismically active area so the construction includes much rebar and cement. This system is sanitary and odor free and is supported by a national initiative for rural areas. The girls toilets include a wash-up sink to encourage menstruating girls to stay in school.$0$17,708
Bamboo Propagation Nursery: This initiative adds economic benefit to the region training young farmers in planting this renewable crop used as construction material a furniture making material and biofuel. The young shoots are also used as a food source. We are experimenting with hardy species to thrive in the highland cold climate. Ethiopia is the largest exporter of bamboo but it has not been commercially developed in our area. This initiative will broadly expand economic benefit. We have prepared the area planted wind break and sourced many varieties from the national forest and national nurseries. Land has been secured and work with city officials is ongoing to prepare expansion.$0$6,300
Apple Orchard: Our demonstration Apple Orchard is training local farmers to plant this highly nutritious and economic fruit not yet commercially available in our highland region. We needed to import soil for the orchard and fence the area from roaming animals. As part of enlarging the educational experience we promote and sponsor educational training seminars and trips for our trainers.$0$5,800
We are building a terraced area to multiply the plantable area with good soil to plant vegetables and medicinal herbs at the school. We will use this area for STEM educational workshops in agricultural techniques and healthy herbal knowledge. We have installed a high density apple orchard to multiply the economic benefit of small farm areas training farmers in the economical technique.$0$5,200
