Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Community Project is building a community driven K-8 school with vegetable gardens, its own brick producing workshop, bamboo propagation nursery and community facilities for 1000 children and their families in Debre Birhan, Ethiopia. We work in partnership with the community, the local government, Debre Birhan University, Debre Birhan Polytechnic College, 3 Engineers Without Borders teams, Architects Without Borders, and the Ethiopian Mission at the United Nations. Our work is to empower the community with support for better education, sanitation, and economic development for their families.

The Community Project is a nonprofit volunteer organization building a K-8 school, community center, orchards and vegetable gardens in Debre Birhan, Ethiopia to fortify and sustain the community with education, food, and skills training.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Composting Latrines are being designed at Portland State University and built by the community and our team of engineers and volunteers to improve sanitation and capture the valuable waste to use as fertilizer. This initiative is encouraged across the country to encourage good health and nourish overused agricultural land.$0$12,000
The Community Project team and our partner, 3 professional chapters of Engineers Without Borders USA and Portland State University engineering students, are working with the local village community of 630 families, the city administration, the Education Department, the local Debre Birhan Polytechnic College dean, faculty and 18 construction technology students, and Debre Birhan University engineers and experts in the Agriculture school to plan and build the school for 1000 children. We are under construction hiring local skilled labor to teach the volunteer labor new skills and feeding lunch to our volunteers as we build together for their children. Our mission is to work together to empower the community with skills and community strength as we build the school for their children. We are focused on opportunities to learn new skills to use to support their families and improve daily life, supported with a powerful network of local partners for their future.$610$8,188
The newly commissioned compressed earth block machine fabricated at the Polytechnic College will soon be in production. The Polytechnic students will make the hand pressed bricks, training the local community in a new micro business. The community will build the school with their own bricks. The construction will engage large numbers of the community and bring our teams together in daily accomplishment for a better future for the village children and families.$610$5,799
The Solar Initiative is an important part of our work together to improve the lives of the community members. Our Project Manger, the Silver Medal winner in Innovation Technology for Ethiopia is leading the research in Debre Birhan engaging the university and the city officials and working with our 5 US solar energy experts to design an energy independent campus which will include solar panels on the roofs for classroom lighting in the evenings for homework and skills training classes, lit latrines for safety and computers in the classrooms.$0$1,200
