Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The board of directors is responsible for overseeing the audit of the financial statements and the selection of an independent accountant that audited the statements.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Almmii is a qualifying organization under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code (irc) and is, therefore, exempt from income taxes under irc section 501(a) on its normal operations. However, almmii is taxed on other unrelated income that is not considered related to its exempt purpose, if any. Almmii follows financial accounting standards board (fasb) guidance on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under this guidance, almmii may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of almmii and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business income. The tax benefits recognized in the financial statements from such a position are measured based on the largest benefit that has a greater than 50 percent likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement. The guidance on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes also addresses de-recognition, classification, interest and penalties on income taxes and accounting in interim periods. At december 31, 2017 and 2016, there were no unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities. Almmii files the form 990 in the u.s federal jurisdiction and the state of michigan. Generally, the statute of limitations restricts federal and state examinations by taxing authorities to three to four years from the date of filing. When and if applicable, potential interest and penalty costs are accrued as incurred, with expenses recognized in general and administrative expenses in the statement of activities.

IRS990/Desc0AMERICAN LIGHTWEIGHT MATERIALS MANUFACTURING INNOVATION INSTITUTE, DBA LIGHTWEIGHT INNOVATIONS FOR TOMORROW (LIFT), WAS ESTABLISHED TO DEVELOP AND EXECUTE NEW AND INNOVATIVE LIGHTWEIGHT TECHNOLOGIES. MANY PROJECTS HAVE BEEN LAUNCHED TO FURTHER RESEARCH AND ADVANCE THE STATE OF LIGHTWEIGHT MATERIALS TO REDUCE COST AND INCREASE EFFICIENCY IN TRANSPORTATION SECTORS OF THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY. EXAMPLES INCLUDE: 1) REDESIGNING SHIPPING CONTAINERS TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY LIGHTER AND MODULAR IN SHAPE, 2) REMOVAL OF 30% OF THE MASS ON THE MOST WIDELY-USED DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER FOUND IN REAR AXLES, AND 3) THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIGHTWEIGHT ALUMINUM AND MAGNESIUM METAL-MATRIX-COMPOSITES. FURTHER, LIFT OFFERS ACCESS TO HIGH-END MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PURPOSES. SIMILAR MACHINES IN INDUSTRY ARE NORMALLY DEDICATED TOWARD LARGE SCALE MANUFACTURING WITH LIMITED ABILITY TO BE UTILIZED FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT. LIFT SOLVES THIS ISSUE AND BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AND MANUFACTURING. LIFT'S CAPABILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, MECHATRONICS AND ROBOTIC WELDING/JOINING, LINEAR FRICTION WELDING, INCREMENTAL FORMING, STAMPING, HYDROFORMING, EXTRUSION, PLASMA SURFACE-PRE-TREATMENT AND PLASMA COATING, AND POWDER METALLURGY. ADDITIONALLY, LIFT MAINTAINS A FULL MACHINE SHOP AND A FULL SUITE OF ANALYTICAL AND NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION CAPABILITIES WITHIN ITS WORLD-CLASS METROLOGY LABORATORY. LIFT ALSO CONDUCTS INTERNAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS TO ADVANCE TECHNOLOGIES AND ADD VALUE TO ITS MEMBERS. EXAMPLES INCLUDE THE INVESTIGATION OF SURFACE PRE-TREATMENTS TO INCREASE ADHESIVE-BOND-STRENGTHS MADE WITH STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES, AS WELL AS INVESTIGATING THE APPLICATION OF STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES IN THE DEEPWATER OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY (AN INDUSTRY FIRST).

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0THE CHALLENGE AND LIFT'S IMPACTTHERE ARE PROJECTED TO BE 3.5 MILLION AVAILABLE MANUFACTURING JOBS OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS, CAUSED BY ECONOMIC EXPANSION PLUS BABY BOOMER RETIREMENTS. MORE THAN 2 MILLION OF THOSE JOBS ARE EXPECTED TO GO UNFILLED UNLESS SOMETHING CHANGES THAT TRAJECTORY. AT THE SAME TIME, TECHNOLOGY IS BEING INFUSED INTO EVERY MANUFACTURING WORKPLACE, LEAVING WORKERS WITHOUT TECH SKILLS UNEQUIPPED TO BE SUCCESSFUL. LIFT'S EDUCATION & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM IS ATTACKING THE SKILLS GAP HEAD-ON AND ALIGNING TECHNOLOGY AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT TO BUILD A NEXT GENERATION, DIGITALLY COMPETENT WORKFORCE. IN JUST OVER 4 YEARS, LIFT HAS IMPLEMENTED SOLUTIONS TO: - INCREASE STUDENTS' STEM AND EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS AND ATTRACT THEM TO MANUFACTURING CAREERS; - ENSURE THE TECHNICAL WORKFORCE ACHIEVES STANDARDS-BASED, NATIONALLY-PORTABLE, INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED CREDENTIALS; - DEVELOP THE TECHNICIAN WORKFORCE THAT CAN OPTIMIZE PROCESSES AND SYSTEMS; AND - INTEGRATE WORK EXPERIENCES INTO ENGINEERING PROGRAMS OF STUDY. LIFT'S SOLUTIONS ARE REPLICABLE AND SCALABLE, AND SPAN FROM K-12 STUDENTS TO GRADUATE-DEGREED PROFESSIONALS; LIFT TEACHES THE TEACHERS WHO EXPONENTIALLY IMPACT THEIR STUDENTS; LIFT UP-SKILLS INCUMBENT WORKERS TO READY THEM FOR THE TECH ENVIRONMENT; AND LIFT EXPANDS THE TALENT POOL BY ENGAGING NEW POPULATIONS. OVER 200,000 STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND WORKERS HAVE BEEN IMPACTED THUS FAR.THERE IS NO REVENUE ALLOCATED TO THIS PROGRAM SERVICE BECAUSE THE REVENUE FOR THE EDUCATION & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM IS RECORDED AS IN-KIND CONTRIBUTIONS; AS SUCH, THESE IN-KIND CONTRIBUTIONS AND THE CORRESPONDING EXPENSES ARE CONSIDERED TO BE DONATED SERVICES FOR PURPOSES OF THE 990, AND ARE THEREFORE SHOWN AS RECONCILING ITEMS RATHER THAN INCLUDED IN THE STATEMENT OF REVENUE AND STATEMENT OF FUNCTIONAL EXPENSES. THE IN-KIND CONTRIBUTIONS FOR THE EDUCATION & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM WERE RECORDED AT $2,603,392 IN 2017.
