“The Board of Trustees reviewed compensation for the Artistic Director and the General Manager at its March 2021 meeting, based on recommendations from its compensation committee and without the presence of the individuals concerned. The compensation committee gave full consideration to compensation for artistic directors of other choral groups, and documented that comparison in the records of its meetings. The March 2021 decision on compensation for the part-time General Manager was essentially to renew the existing contract with a cost-of-living increase from the salary approved by the full Board at its May and June 2020 meetings, which included comparability data and documentation in minutes. Following the resignation of that General Manager due to a family move outside the area, the Board in June 2021 decided to expand the position to a full-time Managing Director with increased responsibility and higher compensation in a range based on informal comparability checks and advice from an outside consultant, subsequently tested in the marketplace. That decision is documented in the minutes of the June 13, 2021, Board meeting,”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Concerts & Workshops: Committed to life-affirming, excellent and relevant programs, The Thirteen presented six choral concerts for over 1800 audience members in 2020-21. Due to the pandemic, these offerings were live-streamed online without a live audience. Despite cancelled concerts, The Thirteen ensured all its artists received full compensation thanks to our generous donors. Among the subscription series was September's Not for the Sun I Sing, an exploration of women composers and the relationship of humans to the natural world featuring Elena Ruehr's Cassandra in the Temple. Sorrow to the Stars in October marked a time of mourning with masterpieces of the last 120 years from Schoenberg, Howells, and Paert that explored the communal quest for memory and transfiguration across cultures. An Evening of Readings and Carols in December created holiday spirit mixing traditions from King's College with modern poetry from Maya Angelou and Margaret Gooding. March 2021 saw the dramatic staging of Bach's St. John Passion that refracted its transcendent themes of debasement and glorification through today's struggles with racism and violence. As The Washington Post noted, "How quickly the abstractions of the "Passion" can snap into something knowable - borderline documentary - just by changing the lens." Finally, May brought a return to Monteverdi, assembling from his magnum opus a monumental "Mass of 1641" in another acclaimed production with North America's finest performers. October's Fall Fete combined a variety of engaging ensembles and solos with an all-virtual silent auction to draw our community together during hard times and to offer additional opportunities for performers to practice their craft. While Covid paused our plans for workshops and tours, The Thirteen was glad to reach online audiences far afield, garner praise from diverse media critics, and plan a return to live performance in the following season. Note that the concerts and workshops program also benefits from expenses associated below with recordings and commissions. |
