Lung Cancer Awareness and Screenings

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Annual grant to New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital to operate a lung cancer screening program. Around 655,000 people in the US have been diagnosed with lung cancer at some point in their lives. The 5-year survival rate for all stages of lung cancer is about 18%. This varies significantly depending on the stage of the cancer at diagnosis. 49% of lung cancer is detected at screening in the early stages. This group's 5-year survival rate is 88%. From 2013 to 2024 the Foundation has provided approximately 2,000 screenings. Lung Cancer is still the leading cause of death in the US, claiming around 125,000 lives annually. In 2025, it's estimated that 226,650 people will be diagnosed with Lung Cancer. Early detection and treatment remain the most important factors in long-term survival. Research has shown that, unlike chest X-rays, yearly LDCT scans to screen people at higher risk of lung cancer can save lives. The Foundation's support of the Program and NY Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital continues to support and raise awareness of the availability of lung screenings and connects patients to follow-up treatments who qualify. The cost of the screenings is waived for those who are uninsured and those whose insurance requires a co-payment. The Foundation, this year, helped the hospital acquire a C-Arm Imaging Machine. The C-Arm is crucial in detecting and characterizing lung cancer, especially when used for biopsy guidance. It enhances the accuracy of biopsies and sampling of lung lesions. C-Arm CBCT-guidance biopsies are considered highly accurate and safe. The Foundation continues to support the Patient Navigator. These individuals help guide patients through and around barriers in the cancer system to help ensure timely diagnosis and treatment. Together with NY-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, the lung screening program is the largest in the Brooklyn community.$50,000$50,000
