Deep Vellum Publishing is a not-for-profit literary publisher that seeks to enhance the open exchange of ideas among cultures and to connect the worlds greatest untranslated contemporary writers of literature and creative nonfiction with English-language readers for the first time through original translations, while facilitating educational opportunities for students of translation in the Dallas community.
| Description | Grants | Expenses |
|---|---|---|
| By the end of 2018, Deep Vellum published 38 books written by 32 authors from 5 continents and 18 countries, translated from 15 different languages, including debut novels alongside renowned authors in original translations. Our books are also available as e-books on all digital bookselling platforms, in addition to high-quality trade print books. Deep Vellum measures success by: - Book Sales: Through data from our national distributor, ebook retailers, subscriptions, and direct sales. We project average sales of 3,000 copies per title, reaching many more through library and school outreach, plus our writer event programming. Between book sales, books shared, and through related author, translator, and other literary events, our programming initiatives reached an estimated audience of 75,000 individuals in 2018.- Critical Reception: Maintaining positive, broad critical reception, awards, and word-of-mouth enthusiasm from the literary community is one indicator of programmatic success. In 2018, Deep Vellum's book Not One Day by Anne Garrta, and translated from the French by Emma Ramadan, won the Albertine Prize. Our book Of Darkness by Josefine Klougart, translated from the Danish by Martin Aitken, was nominated for the International Dublin Literary Award. And Deep Vellum's books continued to receive major critical attention, including a major feature-length review in the world's oldest literary review, the Times Literary Supplement, of The Geography of Rebels Trilogy by Maria Gabriela Llansol, translated from the Portuguese by Audrey Young; a major review of Revenge of the Translator by Brice Matthieussent, translated from the French by Emma Ramadan, in the Los Angeles Review of Books; and many end-of-year accolades, including 4 Deep Vellum books included in World Literature Today's 75 Notable Translations of 2018.- Event Attendance Tracking: Through monitoring event-related book sales, email newsletter sign-ups, post- engagement feedback from attendees, and maintaining demographic diversity in the audiences served. These include the 110 attendees of our Banthology book launch in April 2018, supported with a City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs grant, at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, as well as 40 attendees to Icelandic author feigur Sigurdssons book launch for rfi: The Wasteland held at Deep Vellum Books in Dallas, where the author was in conversation with Dallas-based writer David Searcy (Sigurdssons audience ranged from 20 to 60 attendees at the other 10 events on his 2-week tour of the US in October 2018); and the 20 attendees to each of the inaugural five Deep Vellum Book Club discussions. - Digital Audience Growth: Through data compiled from Google Analytics, and social media reports. We project an increase in website traffic to 50,000 visits by 2020, with an increase to 10,000+ followers on Facebook, 10,000+ followers on Twitter, and 10,000+ followers on Instagram. On average, we have an organic reach of nearly 25,000 (18% Texas-based) weekly impressions via Twitter; 4,500 weekly impressions (21% Texas-based) via Facebook; and 3,800 (25% Dallas-based) weekly impressions via Instagram. Our regular, monthly email marketing updates reach over 3,000 subscribers, in addition to hundreds more on separate lists for trade-specific email marketing targeting booksellers and librarians. - Grants: In 2018, Deep Vellum crossed the major anniversary threshold of 5 years, and in our first-time major government grant applications received our first grants from the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs as well as from the Texas Commission on the Arts. We also received grants from Dallas's own Embrey Family Foundation, plus translation-specific grants from the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, the Russian Institute of Translation, and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy to support our literary programming initiatives, among other grant-making institutions. - Fellowships, Festivals, Conferences, Trade Shows: An integral part of Deep Vellum's success is participating in publishing industry programs around the world: in May 2018 Deep Vellum's director, Will Evans, attended the Finnish Literature Program's Editor's Week Fellowship in Helsinki; Deep Vellum exhibited at the American Library Association Conference in New Orleans, the Texas Book Festival in Austin, and the Tulsa Book Festival; and representatives from Deep Vellum attended the Consortium Book Sales and Distribution sales conferences in New York City (May) and Minneapolis (November).- Collaborations: Much of Deep Vellum's success is due to partnering with complementary organizations to expand the audience and reach of our programming. In addition to publishing books, Deep Vellum has collaborated with nationwide partners including independent bookstores, libraries, and universities; in 2018 Deep Vellum partnered with PEN America and the Embrey Family Foundation; the University of Texas at Dallas Translation Center; the French Embassy; and more to program well over 100 conversations with our authors and translators across the world since our founding. | $83,766 | - |
