Mission

Deep Vellum Publishing is a not-for-profit literary publisher that seeks to enhance the open exchange of ideas among cultures and to connect the worlds greatest untranslated contemporary writers of literature and creative nonfiction with English-language readers for the first time through original translations, while facilitating educational opportunities for students of translation in the Dallas community.

Deep Vellum Publishing was founded in the historic neighborhood of Deep Ellum in Dallas, Texas in the summer of 2013 as a literary arts organization dedicated to making the world a more literary place through publishing the worlds best authors in original English translations and fostering conversations between readers, authors, and translators. Deep Vellum has published a tremendously diverse slate of books engaging the English-reading public with the larger global conversation: to date we have published 30 books by 23 authors 12 women, 11 men from 17 countries on 5 continents writing in 11 languages and reaching approximately 100,000 readers. We have organized over 50 programs in Dallas and over 100 programs nationwide to foster dialogue between readers, authors, and translators. Awards: Deep Vellum kicked off 2016 by being recognized as Dallass Best Publisher by D Magazine and the Best New Thing in Dallas by the Dallas Observer. Deep Vellums Tram 83 was nominated for the Man Booker International Prize, the single-most important novel prize for a work in translation in the world, won the Etisalat Prize for Debut African Fiction and a French Voices Award, and was nominated for the Best Translated Book Award; Sphinx was a finalist for the Best Translated Book Award and nominated for the PEN Translation Prize; Home and Tram 83 were shortlisted for the CLMP Firecracker Award; Home was nominated for the FT/Oppenheimer Funds Emerging Voices Award; One Hundred Twenty-One Days won a French Voices Award and was named one of Publishers Weeklys Best Books of 2016; and Texas: The Great Theft was nominated for the International Dublin Literary Award. Programs: With the books we publish as the means of opening dialogue with the world, Deep Vellum partners with the community and the larger global publishing landscape to promote a thriving book culture in Dallas and beyond through programs bringing the world in conversation with our community. We are particularly proud of the diversity of conversation-driven programs we were able to present throughout the Dallas community with our international authors and translators in 2016, reaching an estimated audience over 1,000 individuals in Dallas alone, with the audience divided evenly among men and women, comprised of an estimated 45% of attendees who are white, 30% who are Latino/a, 10% African American, 10% Asian, and 5% who Native American, mixed race, and non-identifying. Our 2016 author and translator events in Dallas featured:Lina Meruane (Chile) appeared at the Dallas Book Festival; Carmen Boullosa (Mexico) discussed her work with translator Shelby Vincent at the University of Texas at Dallas; discussed her work at Dallass Latino Cultural Center with Yolette Garcia, Assistant Dean for External Affairs and Outreach at SMU's Simmons School of Education and Human Development; and led a book club group discussion in Spanish and English at the Bachman Lake Together community organization; Noemi Jaffe (Brazil) discussed her work What are the Blind Men Dreaming? with middle school students at Uplift Luna Academy in Deep Ellum who all read her book for class; discussed her work at Deep Vellum Books with Dr. Nils Roemer, Director of the Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies at UT-Dallas; Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer (Netherlands) discussed his work La Superba at the Dallas Institute of Humanities with Dr. Larry Allums; Claudia Salazar Jimnez (Peru) discussed her work Blood of the Dawn with Margaret Brown of Shelf Unbound at Deep Vellum Books in an event to benefit charity organization Seorita helping orphan girls in Peru; Leila S.
