The Madeleine Sone Wildlife Preserve was established to continue work started by Madeleine Sone, and to manage and protect property she accumulated during her lifetime in ways that are beneficial to wildlife, the local ecology, and to humanity. Madeleine believed that humanity can and must learn to coexist with nature, and to that end the land is held open to the public to enjoy without charge. The existing structures on the land are slowly being updated to make them available for public use.

The Madeleine Sone Wildlife Preserve was established to continue work started by Madeleine Sone, and to manage and protect property she accumulated during her lifetime in ways that are beneficial to wildlife, the local ecology, and to humanity. Madeleine believed that humanity can and must learn to coexist with nature, and to that end the land is held open to the public to enjoy without charge. Plans are being formed to re-purpose existing structures on the land for public use.

“Form 990, Part III, Line 4a- One of the primary objectives of the Madeleine Sone Wildlife Preserve is to ensure that the 24-acre property remains open, usable and accesssible to the general public. Based on informal assessments of parking lot traffic and trail usage, it is estimated that approximately 20 hikers visit the Preserve each day, resulting in 600 or more visitors per month who enjoy the tranquil environment and the impressive redwood-filled canyon. The Preserve was open every day in 2024 with the exception of one section of the trail, which was closed for repairs for three months. The main residence is rented as it is necessary and convenient to keep it occupied, so it can be insured and to stop vandalism that occurred when it was empty. The rent collected is used to fund projects such as storm repairs, tree maintenance and removal and general upkeep.”

Income and expenses are discussed throughout the year by email and at Board meetings, and no major spending is undertaken without the informed consent of the directors. The tax return is thus a recap of information already known to the Board. Board members communicate with each other freely, and questions about finances or the tax return are answered promptly.”

Based on informal assessments of parking lot traffic and trail usage, it is estimated that approximately 20 hikers visit the Preserve each day, resulting in 600 or more visitors per month who enjoy the tranquil environment and the impressive redwood-filled canyon. The Preserve was open every day in 2024 with the exception of one section of the trail, which was closed for repairs for three months. The main residence is rented as it is necessary and convenient to keep it occupied, so it can be insured and to stop vandalism that occurred when it was empty. The rent collected is used to fund projects such as storm repairs, tree maintenance and removal and general upkeep. |
