“Project healthy community (phc) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the well-being of persons of all ages within communities in need through nutrition and education programs. Our work is servicing those in the greater detroit area. Examples of programming are: phc's mobile pantry is a collaboration with gleaners community food bank and forgotten harvest. The program provides approximately 100 worth of groceries and fresh vegetables from phc's community garden to 400 families a month. We multiply the benefit of receiving this nutritious food by inviting the community to attend a health and wellness speakers series, offered before their food pick-up. The pe-nut program/fun pantry are school-based nutrition and fitness education classes utilizing the usda-approved "healthy schools, healthy communities" curriculum, incorporating nutritional education, physical activities, food tastings, and "health through literacy" read-alouds led by instructors. Lessons build an understanding of how and why to make healthy choices, where food comes from, and what makes a healthy meal. The family wellness program is a holistic program supporting the health and wellness of detroiters through nutrition education, fitness programming, food access, and clinical care components. The hope circles project/emerging scholars is a mentorship and internship program, connecting high school students to summer internships and providing a stipend for their work, allowing students to participate in valuable internships who otherwise would not be able to afford it. Hope circles also provides pre-internship workshops, which promote creative problem solving skills and increase students' resilience. Other programs - community garden, back to school store with ncjw, and mittens for detroit giveaway.”
