Part I.1 and Part III.1Our Mission Pointing Out the Great Way Foundation (POGWF) brings Indo-Tibetan meditation and teachings to Western students and nurtures and supports the community of practitioners. In turn, POGWF provides support back to the indigenous communities and lineage teachers to help them to preserve and restore their culture and traditions. Historically, POGWF generally has not provided programming to achieve its mission. The majority of our objectives involve directing donor funds to other organizations, both in the U.S. and abroad, who implement the stated projects. Our translation projects are a notable exception. POGWF is an all-volunteer organization.
The objective of this foundation is to revitalize, and preserve the pointing out style of indo-tibetan buddhism and translate these teachings into a body of meditation and related spiritual practices that both preserves the heart of the original, indigenous teachings, while making these teachings accessible, understandable, and successfully implementable in the form of step-by-step meditation practice instructions, and their application of all aspects of daily living, that bring about authentic realizations for westerners along the path of indo-tibetan spiritual practice,

| As part of the Foundations mission it has funded translating one of the most important texts of the Bon Tradition of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, namely the A Khrid. The Foundation, through Daniel Brown, obtained permission for translating this text from His Holiness Menri Trezin, the leader of the Bon Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The Foundation paid Dr. Daniel Brown for his time to translate the text and with permission of the Bon sect obtained a Nepalese scholar to work with Dr. Brown. As it was significantly cheaper to bring a Tibetan monk to the United States then to send a US Tibetan scholar to Tibet, the Foundation funded travel for Geshe Sonam Gurang, a Nepalese native and practicing monk and expert in the Bon Tradition of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, to share his knowledge in the United States. He lived at Dr. Daniel Brown's residence in Gloucester MA for the month of September. Geshe Sonam and Dr. Brown went through the Tibetan A Khrid root text and auto-commentary line-by-line in the original Tibetan and compared each line to the draft translation completed by Dr. Brown and Geshe Sonam with the permission of His Holiness Menri Trezin, and prepared a final English translation of both texts. The text was then submitted to Wisdom Publications and a contract was signed to publish the book in English as part of their great book series. Wisdom Publications considers the A Khrid to be one of the 50 most important works concerning Tibetan Buddhism. Subsequently, the manuscript was sent to an independent Bon scholar, Jean-Luc Achard in France. Mr. Achard compared our English translation to the original Tibetan root text and commentary as an additional check on accuracy. The Foundation has paid for the consultation service in 2014. The manuscript is now in press. As part of the Foundations mission bringing Geshe Sonam to the Boston area allowed this expert in Tibetan Bon tradition to present a week long retreat in cooperation with Dr. Daniel Brown. During his September, 2013 stay in the Boston area Geshe Sonam and Dr. Brown taught a week-long retreat on the A Khrid system of meditation to about 50 Western students for the first time. Students attending were from all over the United States and Western Europe. All proceeds from the course were donated to the Foundation. The Foundation awarded 2 grants to Dr. Brown to translate each of the two main commentaries to Tapihrita's Six Lamps Bon Great Completion Meditation, the two commentaries being the Sun-Light commentary by Au Ri and the Intention and Ultimate Meaning commentary by Bru sGom rGyal ba gYung Drung. A draft translation has been completed for each commentary. A compiled manuscript consisting of the Six Lamps root text and the two commentaries is available through the Foundation. Agreeing with Indo-Tibetan Tradition of the Bon access to the manuscript is restricted to Dr. Brown's and Tenzin Wangyal's students of the Six Lamps.Dr. Brown traveled to Menri Monastery in December to meet with His Holiness Menri Trezin to discuss future translation projects on behalf of the Foundation. His Holiness expressed his wish that Dr. Brown work on translating a number of advanced teachings from Shardza Rinpoches 17 volume collected works, and agreed to show Dr. Brown these practices along with translating the practice texts. His Holiness ordered a complete set of the 17 blocks in old block print style from a monastery in old Tibet as a gift for Dr. Brown, who will start on this project in late 2014 once the manuscripts arrive from Menri Monastery in India.Dr. Brown led a group of 11 Westerners to Rahob Monastery in Khams Easstern Tibet in July, 2013 with Rahob Tulku Rinpoche to consecrate the newly rebuilt philosophy school at Rahob Monastery, that was in part founded by the Foundation. In Chengdu Dr. Brown through the Foundation purchased a 1 meter bronze statue of Guru Rinpoche for the altar at the retreat center in Newton MA.The Foundation has been active in its support of the Mustang Cultural and Educational Center established by Geshe Sonam Gurang in is home area of Mustang, Nepal. The local farmers in that area are struggling because the Kalicandaki River doesn't flow much into the region any longer. To assist with the survival of the farms most of the local children have been pulled out of school to work the dying farms. Through the assistance of Fredi Muller and Saran, a Swiss business and Swiss engineer, plans were developed for a sustainable irrigation system for the region, entailing tapping into underground springs in the mountains and collecting the water in a holding dam. The Foundation donated $16,000 to fully fund the irrigation project. The project will be completed in June, 2014. In exchange for supplying the irrigation the local farmers have agreed to not pull their children from school. The Foundation helped sponsor 23 children to go to school in 2013 and 26 children in 2014. This area of Mustang was historically a strong Tibetan area, but since having become annexed as part of Nepal the local Tibetan people rarely learn their own Tibetan language, history and culture or religious practices. These children will all learn Tibetan language history and culture. Our hope is to sustain Tibetan culture in this geographic area by rebooting Tibetan culture for the younger generation. In addition, the Foundation funded the building of a Cultural Center so that the traditional Tibetan weaving, boot making, and thanka painting arts can be passed down to the younger generation. Lastly, the Bon monastery and temple in this area were looted and destroyed some time ago. Geshe Sonam Gurang was sent to Menri Monastery at the age of 9 to train as a monk. He completed his Geshe degree there, and now in his early 40s he had returned to the Mustang area to bring Bon Tibetan practices back to his people. This cultural center being built in Pingling Village in Mustang area of Nepal is part of the mission of the Foundation to assist the indigenous people who are supplying the West with their traditions. | $43,680 | $67,000 |
