IRS990/Desc0Youth DevelopmentNative Arts and Culture - The Waniyetu Wowapi: Lakota Youth Arts & Culture Institute (LYACI) is an initiative of the Cheyenne River Youth Project (CRYP). The LYACI offers art camps, internships, art classes and workshops, and daily arts and crafts at both the Cokata Wiconi teen center for 13 to 18-year-olds and The Main youth center for 4 to 12-year-olds. Art interns take specific arts classes along with classes dedicated to the development of critical job and life skills. CRYP uses arts programming as a healing and therapeutic measure for youth, giving them the tools they need to express themselves in a positive, healthy way; explore their unique identities; find their own voices; share their stories; and strengthen their connection to the Lakota culture. The LYACI provides opportunities for youth to participate in different genres of art which include fine arts, graffiti and street art, and traditional Lakota arts. RedCan, LYACI's signature annual event, is an invitational graffiti jam that results in the development of culturally-reflective murals all across the community, provides opportunities for cultural exchange, and gives visiting artists a chance to work with local artists and mentor young people. CRYP successfully integrates the principles of RedCan into the LYACI, encouraging the inclusion of culturally-relevant, community-based youth programming into arts space development. The continued growth of the arts at CRYP can be directly observed as art murals are placed throughout CRYP's facilities and throughout the Cheyenne River community.Native Health and Wellness - CRYP provides opportunities for youth to engage in activities dedicated to improving their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. CRYP provides holistic approaches that nurture positive personal growth while strengthening young people's connection to Lakota culture, seeking to reverse the extremely high rates of health disparities that plague the residents of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. CRYP uses cultural experiences that will help youth become well-rounded individuals who will do more than survive in their adult live - they will thrive. CRYP has observed that young people's health and well-being grows as they cultivate their spiritual and cultural identity, supporting their development into the next generation of leaders and culture bearers for the Lakota Nation. CRYP's Wellness Internship Program for teens include sports events and tournaments, fitness camps, circuit training with on-site fitness equipment, nutrition and diabetes-prevention classes, cooking classes, cultural field trips, opportunities to organize community wellness events, and opportunities to mentor their peers as well as the 4 to 12-year-olds at The Main. Native Food Sovereignty and Food Security - Since 2002, the Winyan Toka Win Garden has been a cornerstone of programming at CRYP. The 2.5-acre, naturally-grown garden is a living classroom for youth at the CRYP campus. Youth at CRYP learn about Native food sovereignty, food sustainability, growing and harvesting healthy foods, and traditional Lakota foods and growing techniques. Teens may participate in the Sustainable Agriculture Internship Program, while young children at The Main can take part in Garden Club. Through age-appropriate programming, all the children learn how to plant, maintain, harvest and process healthy foods. CRYP uses fresh, nutritious produce from the Winyan Toka Win Garden in its regular meals and snacks at both Cokata Wiconi and The Main. The produce also is sold through the seasonal Leading Lady Farm Stand and is incorporated into menu and gift items at CRYP's social enterprises, the Keya Cafe & Coffee Shop and Keya Gift Shop. As they work in the garden and learn how to harvest and process, young people are gaining first-hand experience with culturally-relevant foods such as wild berries and turnips, drying them for preservation or incorporating them into delicious r

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Family Services Program Through the Family Services Program, CRYP continues in its mission to serve youth by supporting their families. With basic needs secured, stress is lessened, and parents and guardians are better able to give their children the love, guidance and support they need. Throughout the year, CRYP provides regular access to hygiene products, baby items, cleaning supplies, and other household needs. It also hosts annual school supply and winter clothing distributions, as well as critical matching funds for propane, electricity, and firewood during the cold winter and early spring months. It serves more than 1,500 children across 16 reservation communities through its annual Christmas Toy Drive. Each head of household simply purchases a single membership that covers all family members for one year, and that household then has access to all of CRYP's Family Services.
