IRS990/Description0The Benedictine Health Foundation was established in 1982 as an organization to accept financial and in-kind gifts to benefit Sacred Heart Health Services and the healthcare of our community. Since its beginning the Foundation has distributed almost 4 million dollars in healthcare related grants. These grants were used for equipment, program services, scholarships, seminars, and other special community needs. In Fiscal Year 2010 over 9,467 gifts came in from our donors from around the United States that wish to improve the healthcare in the Avera Sacred Heart service area. Donations are designated into a restricted or unrestricted fund within the Foundation by areas chosen by the donors. Funds are then available to support projects to enhance healthcare. Examples of funds are Cancer, Hospice, Sister James and Yankton Care Center, Adult Day Services, plus many others.

The income from the Clark F. Johnson Memorial Fund is available for approved program expenditures at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, particularly for the elderly. The income from the Thomas Kribell Endowment Fund is available to be used for continuing education of nurses in the obstetrician department. The income from the Lori Schrempp Nursing Scholarship Fund and the Sister Cleopha Fund is used to provide scholarships for professional nursing personnel at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. The income from the Sister Inez Endowment Fund is available to be used to provide meals for financially needy families. The income from the Marie R. Hanson Endowment Fund is available to be used for cancer and hospice needs. The income from the Eisenman Endowment Fund is available for Board approved expenditures. The income from the Ben Fanta Fund is available to be used for special needs in pediatrics.

The implementation of this standard had no impact on the financial statements. As of both the date of adoption, and as of June 30, 2010, the unrecognized tax benefit accrual was zero. The Foundation will recognize future accrued interest and penalties related to unrecognized tax benefits in income tax expense if incurred. The Foundation is no longer subject to Federal tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2007.

Application forms are created based on the qualifications of what the scholarship is based on. Advertising is done along with criteria of scholarship requirements and deadline. A committee is formed for each scholarship. Recipients for the scholarship are based on their merits and accomplishments. Committee members are impartial and a decision for the recipient is made based on the group's decision. In FY2010, 4 medical school students were chosen for $5,000 scholarships. The $20,000 check was issued to the USD School of Medicine. The organization provides donations to related 501(c)(3) organizations to ensure the funds will be used for charitable purposes.
