These organizations are required to file a return of organization exempt from income tax (form 990) with the internal revenue service (irs). Avera health and certain sponsored organizations also file an exempt organization business income tax return (form 990t) with the irs to report their unrelated business taxable income. Avera health and its sponsored organizations believe that they have appropriate support for any tax positions taken affecting its annual filing requirements, and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. The organization would recognize future accrued interest and penalties related to unrecognized tax benefits and liabilities in income tax expense if such interest and penalties are incurred. The federal form 990t filings and taxable subsidiary returns for consolidated subsidiaries are no longer subject to federal tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2015. Certain consolidated entities are subject to federal income taxes. Deferred income tax assets and liabilities are recognized for the differences between the financial and income tax reporting basis of assets and liabilities based on enacted tax rates and laws. Deferred tax assets and liabilities are not material as of june 30, 2018 and 2017. The organization paid an immaterial amount of federal and state income taxes for the years ended june 30, 2018 and 2017.”
