Warrior Songs is a non-profit organization committed to facilitating veterans' healing through music and the creative arts. Our mission is to help veterans to more fully understand and integrate all aspects of their military experience by transforming their traumatic experiences and struggles into an art form which both inspires and is life affirming, thus motivating their continued healing. | STORY TO SONG This program facilitates collaboration between established musicians and veterans to turn a veterans story into song, which then becomes a platform for reflection, transformation and healing.Veterans are invited to submit poetry, story and song at Warrior Songs event or through this website. Veterans retain all rights to original material, and identities are kept confidential if desired at the veterans discretion. Warrior Songs chooses material that represents important issues faced by veterans and has the potential to be converted to song. Selections span all genres of music and reflect accurately the diverse population of the military.A team of songwriters designated by Warrior Songs will collaborate to transform the selected submissions into musical arrangements. Whenever possible songwriters who are military veterans are included in this process and submitting veterans are consulted during the process. The final creation must be approved by the submitting veteran before it can proceed. The submitting veteran retains the right to retract their submission up to the point that the songwriter becomes involved. Once published, unless anonymity is requested, the veteran will be credited, however the song must remain in the public domain as it would be impossible to withdraw a song from a CD.Songs are recorded in a professional recording studio to create a compilation CD of the songs. Whenever possible, musicians who are military veterans are utilized in the processes of recording, producing and promoting CDs.The final product is a full length CD which will be released to the public. The CD's are give free of charge to Veterans. The CD's are also sold on line and at events to fund future volumes.In 2021, Warrior Songs, Inc. released its third CD (Volume 3), titled The Last Thing We Ever Do. A release event was held in Milwaukee, WI with side venues in other communities. Donations in-kind were received from two musicians who performed at event without receiving compensation. | CREATIVE ARTS AND HEALING RETREATSWarrior Songs Retreats provide a safe and supportive healing space where veterans are able to deepen their connection with themselves, each other and those who love and support them. Retreats offer a wonderful opportunity to reclaim life with joy and hope. During the 4-day retreats the stages of departure, service, and transitioning home are explored in depth. Storytelling and various types of art are used to understand, express and integrate the war experience. Art becomes testimony to the pain of war as well as to joy of the healing process. Each veteran creates a plan for moving forward toward continued healing using new tools and skills offered during the retreat.On the last evening of the retreat veterans have the opportunity to share their stories in art form to a gathered community. This allows participants to speak their truth and for civilians to provide a sincere and moving welcome home.Guided by experienced facilitators (some of whom are veterans), the retreats are host to up to 16 veterans. They offer a good balance of time for introspection, expression, reflection and creativity. Warrior Songs retreats are free of charge and all inclusive for veterans.Retreats are funded by donations from generous individuals, organizations and communities that truly care about the healing of our nations veterans. By changing the way we think and act we can open the way for veterans to move out of isolation and desperation, toward healing.Our presentations identify the early signs of isolation, explains the devastating feeling of desperation, and offers creative, effective strategies which help those who are stuck in the grip of PTSD to reconnect with life and with those who love them.Show topics include: * How PTSD affects our veterans after they return home * Reasons why current war conditions create and compound PTSD * Why welcome home parades and ceremonies dont work * Helping civilians understand their role and responsibility in war healing * Seven things not to say to a veteran * Practical ways to help veterans reintegrate and connect with family and community * Why incidents of suicide are epidemic among soldiers and veterans of current conflicts * What you and/or your group can do to help ease the burden of veteransIn 2021, an event was held to promote the organization's purpose through an entertainment venue. A silent auction fundraiser was held offering paintings provided as a donation in-kind from an artist. The value of 27 paintings provided for the fundraiser was estimated at $2,675.00 Each painting was a resprentation of the stories told through the lyrics of the songs which Warrior Songs, Inc. created.
