STORY TO SONG This program facilitates collaboration between established musicians and veterans to turn a veterans story into song, which then becomes a platform for reflection, transformation and healing.Veterans are invited to submit poetry, story and song at Warrior Songs event or through this website. Veterans retain all rights to original material, and identities are kept confidential if desired at the veterans discretion. Warrior Songs chooses material that represents important issues faced by veterans and has the potential to be converted to song. Selections span all genres of music and reflect accurately the diverse population of the military.A team of songwriters designated by Warrior Songs will collaborate to transform the selected submissions into musical arrangements. Whenever possible songwriters who are military veterans are included in this process and submitting veterans are consulted during the process. The final creation must be approved by the submitting veteran before it can proceed. The submitting veteran retains the right to retract their submission up to the point that the songwriter becomes involved. Once published, unless anonymity is requested, the veteran will be credited, however the song must remain in the public domain as it would be impossible to withdraw a song from a CD.Songs are recorded in a professional recording studio to create a compilation CD of the songs. Whenever possible, musicians who are military veterans are utilized in the processes of recording, producing and promoting CDs.The final product is a full length CD which will be released to the public. The CD's are give free of charge to Veterans. CREATIVE ARTS AND HEALING RETREATSWarrior Songs Retreats provide a safe and supportive healing space where veterans are able to deepen their connection with themselves, each other and those who love and support them. Retreats offer a wonderful opportunity to reclaim life with joy and hope. During the 4-day retreats the stages of departure, service, and transitioning home are explored in depth. Storytelling and various types of art are used to understand, express and integrate the war experience. Art becomes testimony to the pain of war as well as to joy of the healing process. Each veteran creates a plan for moving forward toward continued healing using new tools and skills offered during the retreat. On the last evening of the retreat veterans have the opportunity to share their stories in art form to a gathered community. This allows participants to speak their truth and for civilians to provide a sincere and moving welcome home.Guided by experienced facilitators (some of whom are veterans), the retreats are host to up to 16 veterans. They offer a good balance of time for introspection, expression, reflection and creativity.
