Mission

Founded in 2011, The Art of Brooklyn Festival is an organization run by working artists, dedicated to showcasing and promoting a diverse group of emerging independent filmmakers from Brooklyn and beyond. We produce an annual film festival in venues across the borough, including neighborhoods traditionally underserved by arts and culture. Our festival always includes free community events, educational workshops and panel discussions on social issues important to our community. We partner with educational institutions and local businesses to maximize access to as many people as possible.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
We invited filmmakers Edward Worthy (LA) to curate Shorts, Britt Prater (Bklyn) to curate Docs and Matt Campagna and Melissa D'Agostino (Toronto) for Features. We held screenings at AbelCine on their LED Wall, sponsored by Sony. We held a talk with Bklyn filmmaker Chris Kentis for the 20th anniversary of his film Open Water, with screenwriter Dave Chan. We held a panel about virtual production, with Asst Director of the Martin Scorsese Virtual Production Center at NYU MaryAnn Talavera, filmmaker Sean Mannion, Melissa D'Agostino & Matt Campagna. We rented indie Brooklyn theaters Cobble Hill Cinema and Black-woman owned Stuart Cinema and returned to Pratt Film/Video. We produced a free screening on the Main Lawn of Sunset Park with NY Parks Dept. We partnered with NYC musician Shonali to launch her song "Up All NIght" in our Festival trailer. We made over 40 videos (interviews, trailers) for social media. Entries increased 52% from '23, selected screenplays up by 73% our highest to date. We serve a community of diverse filmmakers in neighborhoods across Brooklyn and around the world, and an equally diverse audience, in person and streaming online. In FY24 we produced events in Clinton Hill/Fort Greene, Cobble Hill, Greenwood Heights, Greenpoint, and Sunset Park (which is underserved by art and culture events), and internationally via Eventive's Virtual Festival Platform. We had 1,500 attendees in person and online. As of 2024 we've produced affordable film events at 24 local venues across 12 different neighborhoods, including low income and underserved areas.$30,000$30,000
