Sustainable jersey's mission is to empower new jersey communities to build a better world for future generations with the tools, training, technical assistance, and financial incentives necessary to pursue critical sustainability initiatives.
Sustainable jersey's mission is to make "a better tomorrow, one community at a time." this is done through a bottom-up-meets-top-down collaborative process that sets standards, develops guidance and assistance programs, and coordinates resources. The program model promotes direct collaboration between citizens and their municipal governments and local school districts along with the broader array of resource organizations in the state and country in order to take a holistic approach to helping municipalities and schools address sustainability issues. State and federal agencies, non-profits, foundations, and local leaders use the sustainable jersey framework to coordinate resources and policy development that enables and motivates local government and schools to make progress.

THIS IS DONE THROUGH A BOTTOM-UP-MEETS-TOP-DOWN COLLABORATIVE PROCESS THAT SETS STANDARDS, DEVELOPS GUIDANCE AND ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS, AND COORDINATES RESOURCES. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | MUNICIPAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM: SUSTAINABLE JERSEY BEGAN IN 2009 AS A FREE MUNICIPAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT THAT IDENTIFIES SPECIFIC ACTIONS COMMUNITIES CAN TAKE TO GO GREEN, SAVE MONEY, AND SUSTAIN THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE OVER THE LONG TERM. MUNICIPALITIES CAN IMPLEMENT THE ACTIONS AND DOCUMENT THEIR PROGRESS TO RECEIVE POINTS TOWARD CERTIFICATION. THE STANDARDS ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A ROBUST PROGRAM OF TRAINING AND SUPPORT, AND A SUITE OF FINANCIAL INCENTIVES PROVIDED BY BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SOURCES. BY THE END OF 2019, 451 NEW JERSEY MUNICIPALITIES (80% OF THE STATE) WERE REGISTERED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM AND WERE WORKING TO IMPLEMENT SUSTAINABILITY MEASURES. A TOTAL OF 212 MUNICIPALITIES ARE CURRENTLY CERTIFIED, 161 AT THE BRONZE LEVEL AND 51 AT THE SILVER LEVEL. COLLECTIVELY, CERTIFIED COMMUNITIES HAVE IMPLEMENTED AND DOCUMENTED OVER 11,500 ACTIONS ADDRESSING THE MOST PRESSING ISSUES SUCH AS CLIMATE CHANGE, UNSUSTAINABLE LAND USE, DECLINING LOCAL ECONOMIES, EXPOSURE TO ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS, NATURAL RESOURCE PROTECTION, DIVERSITY AND EQUITY, POPULATION HEALTH, AND MANY OTHERS. IN ADDITION, THESE COMMUNITIES HAVE FORMED HUNDREDS OF GREEN TEAMS OR SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSIONS THAT ARE FORMAL BODIES OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT CHARGED WITH IMPLEMENTING SUSTAINABLE JERSEY ACTIONS. SUSTAINABLE JERSEY ACTIONS ARE RESEARCHED AND DEVELOPED BY ISSUE-BASED TASK FORCES COMPRISED OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM ACADEMIA, THE NON-PROFIT SECTOR, THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY, AND FEDERAL, STATE, COUNTY AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS. SUSTAINABLE JERSEY LEADS THESE GROUPS AS THEY RESEARCH AND DISSEMINATE BEST PRACTICES, TRANSLATE GLOBAL AND STATE IMPERATIVES INTO LOCAL ACTIONS, TEST SUSTAINABILITY PLANNING MODELS AND DEVELOP COMMUNITY RESOURCES FOR THE PROGRAM. IN 2018, SUSTAINABLE JERSEY EXPANDED THE PROGRAM TO ENCOURAGE SILVER-CERTIFIED TOWNS TO ACHIEVE HIGHER LEVELS OF PERFORMANCE IN KEY DIMENSIONS OF SUSTAINABILITY. GOLD STARS ARE AWARDED ONE DIMENSION OF SUSTAINABILITY AT A TIME. THE INITIAL SUSTAINABLE JERSEY GOLD STAR STANDARDS FOCUSED ON ENERGY AND WASTE. IN FY2019 WOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP WAS AWARDED THE FIRST GOLD STAR IN ENERGY. GOLD STAR STANDARDS IN ADDITIONAL DIMENSIONS ARE UNDERWAY INCLUDING A GOLD STAR IN WATER TO BE RELEASED IN 2020 AND A GOLD STAR IN HEALTH.SUSTAINABLE JERSEY ENTERED INTO A MASTER SERVICES AGREEMENT WITH THE COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY TO RECEIVE ONGOING SERVICES AND FACILITATE CERTAIN SUSTAINABLE JERSEY GRANTS. AS PART OF THE ONGOING SERVICES RECEIVED, IT IS ESIMATED THAT THE COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY DONATED $209,712 IN CONTRIBUTIONS AND EXPENSES RELATED TO THIS PROGRAM. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc | 0 | CULTURE OF HEALTH INITIATIVE: IN FY2019, SUSTAINABLE JERSEY EMBARKED ON A TWO-YEAR INITIATIVE TO DEVELOP A GOLD STAR STANDARD IN HEALTH. THE STANDARD WILL BE BASED ON A COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE AUTHORITY AND LEVERS OF INFLUENCE AVAILABLE TO MUNICIPALITIES TO IMPLEMENT SPECIFIC EVIDENCE-BASED ACTIONS THAT ARE PREDICTED TO IMPROVE THE UPSTREAM DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AND HEALTH EQUITY. THIS EFFORT WILL LAY DOWN PROCEDURAL AND INSTITUTIONAL PATHWAYS FOR BUILDING AN INCLUSIVE CULTURE OF HEALTH AND FOSTERING TRANSFORMATIVE LOCAL ACTION. IT WILL TAKE A COMPREHENSIVE VIEW OF HEALTH, WITH A PARTICULAR FOCUS ON REDUCING DISPARITIES BY DEVELOPING SOLUTIONS THAT ADDRESS CONDITIONS PREVALENT IN NEIGHBORHOODS WITH A HIGH AND CUMULATIVE CONCENTRATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS (SUCH AS POOR AIR QUALITY, CONTAMINATION BY LEAD AND OTHER TOXICS, FREQUENT FLOODING) AND LOW ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOOD, SAFE STREETS, AND GREEN SPACES. WHEREVER THEY RESIDE, VULNERABLE PEOPLE, AMONG THEM CHILDREN, THE ELDERLY AND INCOME-CONSTRAINED HOUSEHOLDS, WILL EXPERIENCE THE GREATEST BENEFIT FROM THE INCLUSIVE CULTURE OF HEALTH ADVANCED BY THIS PROJECT.SUSTAINABLE JERSEY ENTERED INTO A MASTER SERVICES AGREEMENT WITH THE COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY TO RECEIVE ONGOING SERVICES AND FACILITATE CERTAIN SUSTAINABLE JERSEY GRANTS. AS PART OF THE ONGOING SERVICES RECEIVED, IT IS ESIMATED THAT THE COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY DONATED $51,713 IN CONTRIBUTIONS AND EXPENSES RELATED TO THIS PROGRAM. |
