Mission

To engage in charitable, educational, scientific or literary purposes. In furtherance, the corporation may, alone or in cooperation with other entities or persons, facilitate thoughtful discussion and debate on important issues of state, national and international relevance in order to advance the public's understanding of such topics.

To engage in educational purposes by offering tuition-based retreats, workshops, public events, and a creative residency that supplies housing and studios for artists. Programs on a 100-acre rensselaerville, ny campus weave humanities, arts, systems thinking, and community leadership to build practical skills, idea exchange, and a deep sense of place.

2024 was a transition year in which the organization re-launched as hilltown commons and conducted pilot educational programs on its 100-acre rensselaerville, ny campus. Two tuition-based workshops-one in bodywork and one in creative writing-tested curriculum, faculty partnerships, and campus logistics in preparation for a full program slate in 2025.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

A provision for income taxes has not been included in the accompanying financial statements for hilltown commons, inc. As it is a not-for-profit organization exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the organization's tax exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. The activities resulted in no unrelated business taxes for the year ended december 31, 2024. The corporation is incorporated pursuant to the not for-profit corporation law of the state of delaware. The corporation is also registered with new york state department of law, charities bureau. The financial accounting standards board (fasb) issued fasb asc 740-10 which requires entities to disclose in their financial statements the nature of any uncertainty in their tax position. For tax-exempt entities, their tax-exempt status itself is deemed to be an uncertainty, since events could occur to jeopardize their tax-exempt status. However, the institute has no knowledge of events or circumstances that would jeopardize its tax-exempt statuses. The organization implemented fasb asc 740-10 and its current accounting policy for evaluating uncertain tax positions is in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. The organization has not recognized any benefits from uncertain tax positions in 2024 and believes it has no uncertain tax positions for which it is reasonably possible that the total amounts of unrecognized tax benefits will significantly increase or decrease within 12 months of the statements of financial position date. The organization evaluated its tax position and concluded that all of the positions taken by the organization would more likely than not be sustained upon examination, based on technical merits. The information returns of the organization for 2021, 2022, and 2023 are subject to examination by tax authorities, generally for three years after they were filed.
