IRS990/Desc0To accomplish its mission, the organization purchased a building located in Long Island City, Queens and will be converting the space into an animal adoption center. Adoptable dogs and cats will receive a high level of care and will be taught the skills needed to make transitioning into a home as seamless as possible for them and their adopters. To do this, the center will be set up with rooms and not cages. The rooms will contain furnishings, just as would be seen in a home environment. Dogs and cats are social creatures and need playgroups, co-habitation, encouragement based training techniques and classic conditioning for behavior modification. The adoption center will also be a destination for animal education in support of people in the community. By providing non-judgmental assistance to our neighbors on topics like animal care, low-cost or free spay and neuter surgeries, and animal advocacy to prevent animals from being separated from their families.

IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt0Due to the deteriorated condition of the organizations existing animal adoption center, a decision was made to seel the structure (and property). The proceeds from the sale of the property were placed into an escrow fund at the request of the New York Attorney Generals Office. A new lot was located and purchased in 2018. In 2018, the organization hired an architect to create plans for a new animal adoption center. The plans were approved by the New York City Department of Buildings 16 months later. In March of 2020, the organization hired a general contractor to commence construction. A few months later, the contractors principal died of COVID. A new general contractor has since been hired and construction has commenced. At this time, construction of the entire building is largely complete. Construction has moved very slowly and costs are significantly over budget.Ordinarily, the organization receives most, if not all, of its support from the public. The public support percentages calculated in Schedule A, Part III, Sections C & D are not representative of the organizations mission and are currently skewed by two things: 1) the proceeds of the sale of the previous property remaining invested while construction languished due largely to the COVID pandemic and the resultant shortages and cost increases of building materials and 2) a generous donor has contributed over 1 million dollars in publicly traded stock to the organization. The donor has since passed away and the donors estate has contributed additional stock. This was an unusual situation which we feel will be overtaken by the revenues from the adoption center operations once the building is allowed to be open to the public. At the time of this filing, the organization is still awaiting a final Certificate of Occupancy from the New York City Department of Buildings.
