Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

New classrooms has its form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm and has established the following review process to ensure that the information reported is complete and accurate. When the form 990 has been prepared, reviewed by management, and is ready to be filed with the internal revenue service, it is electronically transmitted to the board of directors for any comments prior to its submission. The ceo and cpo then review any comments and work with the relevant staff and accounting firm to make any necessary changes. Each issue is documented and addressed until the return is finalized and approved for filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

New classroom board members are given a copy of the conflict of interest policy at least annually, as well as upon any revision thereto, and are required to sign a document certifying that they have read and understood the conflict of interest policy and agree to comply with it. The policy requires that all individuals have a duty to disclose to the directors any potential or actual conflicts that may exist. If a potential or actual conflict is disclosed at any time, the board will review the material facts and circumstances. If it is determined that a conflict does exist, the board will determine whether the transaction at issue may be obtained with reasonable efforts via an advantageous transaction or arrangement that would not give rise to a conflict or, if that is not reasonably possible, whether the original transaction is in the best interest of the organization and fair and reasonable. The interested person does not participate in any vote or discussion on this matter.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The talent committee of the board conducts an annual review of officers' compensation and the compensation of highly paid employees. As part of this review, the committee, references available market data for comparable positions (via independently verified sources as well as reported 990 compensation of like size and focus peer organizations) and internal equity considerations. The annual review and approval process of the talent committee of the board covers all officers and highly paid employees. Additionally, the committee approves any compensation package offered to new senior members on an ongoing basis. This process is documented in the minutes of the board meetings and last undertaken in 2013.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its form 990 available for public inspection as required under section 6104 of the internal revenue code. The return is posted on guidestar.org and other similar types of websites. In addition, the financial statements, conflict of interest policy, form 990, form 1023, and by-laws are also available upon written request at 1250 broadway, 30th floor, new york, ny 10001 or by calling the organization directly at 212-920-6130.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, Line 1

New classrooms innovation partners (new classrooms) is a nonprofit organization that designs and implements innovative instructional school models that reimagine the use of time, talent, technology, and physical space in order to provide a personalized learning experience for every student every day. New classrooms' first-of-its-kind technology draws from tens of thousands of high quality lessons to create a customized and dynamic curriculum for each student each day. Our flagship instructional model, teach to one: math, integrates teacher-led, collaborative, and independent instruction in ways that enable students to not just learn skills but apply them in real world contexts. Teach to one grew out of a new york city pilot program called school of one, which time magazine named one of the "best inventions of 2009".

Form 990, Part III, Line 1

New classrooms is a nonprofit organization that designs and implements innovative instructional school models that reimagine the use of time, talent, technology, and physical space in order to provide a personalized learning experience for every student every day.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A

Major activities to support the teach to one: math program during the reporting period included: - helping schools to redesign the classroom to support personalized education for all students; - creating and refining a common core-aligned skills map, which provides the academic framework for the teach to one: math model; - screening, sourcing and creating over 12,000 digital and teacher-led lessons from over 50 providers so that students experience a variety of ways to learn and master skills; - generating daily personalized schedules for 6,000 students and teachers each day so that every student can learn at his or her own pace in ways best suited for them; - providing daily on-site and central operational and instructional support to all 15 school partners implementing the teach to one: math program; and - helping students make 1.5 years' of growth compared to national averages, which is equivalent to two months' worth of additional math learning. Measuring impact to measure whether we have successfully accelerated student learning so that students are better prepared for advanced high school math, new classrooms uses the measures of academic progress (map), a standardized online exam created by the northwest evaluation association (nwea). In the 2013-14 school year, new classrooms worked with the center for technology and school change at columbia university's teachers college to complete an independent evaluation of the first year map results of teach to one: math. Their report found that: - on average, students in teach to one made about 1.5 years' worth of growth compared to national norms. That is equivalent to an extra two months' worth of math learning. - english language learners and special education students also showed stronger gains than the national norms, gaining on average 1.7 and 1.4 years of growth, respectively. - african american, white, and hispanic students grew at 1.4 times the national average. Asian students grew at a rate 1.7 times the national norm.

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C

New classrooms' management and board members oversee the selection of an independent accountant and the financial statement audit.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

New classrooms recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not to be sustained. Management has determined that new classrooms had no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement recognition or disclosure. New classrooms is no longer subject to examinations by the applicable taxing jurisdictions for periods prior to june 30, 2011.
