| Description | Grants | Expenses |
|---|---|---|
| SHEP Herd Club Teach Deaf Blind individuals how to read braille, use the specific equipment like readers, braille machines, and provide support and service to the deaf blind community. SHEP improves the quality of life and independence with the (Deaf Blind Individual) DBI, being able to live independently. With the training that we provide to the first responders, they can utilize equipment to quickly respond to emergency situations and interact and notify the deaf blind by taking the specific precautions and by using the quick response cue cards written in braille. First responders have stated it will reduce the footprint of their response time. They are now able to identify if the household has a dual sensory loss need by the decal stickers and by the training and have a quicker and more in-depth response. This includes knowing if there is a DB and where they sleep. Because if they respond to someone and their abilities are diminished, the first responders must be able to quickly communicate and move forward with a course of action. This helps the DB be able to assume the same qualities of life that another individual would receive in life saving measures and actions. This also helps their independence by not having a communication barrier with first responders in emergency situations. Sometimes, not all situations are emergencies, but in any circumstances, knowing there is a communication tool in place for first responders to serve our community and its people helps promote the quality of life for the deaf blind individual and helps increase response time for the rest of the community at large. 2. SHEP has a program with DRS that allows the deaf blind to get transportation to and from work. This program will improve workplace inclusion by putting the decals at the workplace in case of an emergency. First responders are able to communicate with the Deaf blind individual with the cue cards and know that there is a deaf blind individual at the work site with the approval and cooperation of the employer. This will help with mental health and stress issues for the deaf blind individual to know that there is a safety plan and a course of action in place at the workplace. This can also help a deaf blind individual thrive and promote autonomy knowing they will have a course of action to follow in case of an emergency. 3. SHEP provides training to local and regional first responders. We provide ASL (American Sign Language) for communication tools and provide and assist with maintaining a database for the first responders to quickly identify the deaf blind individuals in the community. We do this by also providing non-descript decals for the first responders to provide knowledge that a deaf blind individual lives at the residence or works at a specific location. We at large provide a connection and a bridge between the first responders, the deaf blind individuals, and the community. S.H.E.P also hosts monthly training courses for individuals and the community for information on interacting and communicating with the deaf blind. We also provide training for the deaf blind to be able to navigate the world around them with the tools provided and host monthly outings for the deaf blind community at large. We provide awareness and advocacy to educate the community on a monthly and quarterly basis. We are providing a lasting impact on their lives by providing a bridge and a tool to the first responders and the community around them. The first responders have a shared goal with our organization and that is to keep the community safe, response times quick, and to improve the life of the deaf blind individuals around us. | $41,602 | $40,000 |
