Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of youthplaces (yp) is to develop the skills of young people, and in doing so, increase their opportunity for success. Yp focuses on underserved youth and young adults in high-risk communities where few other agencies operate.

Major Activities

Activity 2
YouthPlaces offers academic enrichment and tutoring to over 1,200 youth. Academic Enrichment consists of tutoring, journal writing, communication skill development, special project workshops, study-skill building, learning style development, test taking, and academic goal setting to name a few. It is our aim that the academic enrichment programs will continue to improve behaviors in high-risk youth that is important for school performance, build skills that will enhance individual and group learning, and improve overall academic performance in math and reading.
Activity 3
YouthPlaces uses a group-mentoring model for over 2,400 youth, which helps to develop life and socialization skills. Mentoring is a very important component in our program. For this reason, we offer mentoring throughout the year. Mentor topics include that of self-image and self-improvement, decision-making, coping with anger, communication skills, social skills, and assertiveness. Speakers can be incorporated into topic discussions including Planned Parenthood, Victims of Violent Crime, Tobacco Free Allegheny, ALCOSAN, or One Vision, One Life. Also, group activities can serve as a strategy for facilitating socialization and communication skills and range from sewing to fishing to arts to fitness.

IRS990ScheduleD/Form990ScheduleDPartXIV/Explanation0The Organization adopted the standard for accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in a company's financial statements that prescribes a recognition threshold of more-likely-than-not to be sustained upon examination by the appropriate taxing authority. In accordance with the applicable standard, this was deferred in fiscal year 2009 and adopted in fiscal year 2010. Measurement of the tax uncertainty occurs if the recognition threshold has been met. The standard also provides guidance on derecognition, classification, interest and penalties, accounting in interim periods, and disclosure. Management has determined that the adoption of the standard did not have a material effect on the financial statements. The Organization's policy is to recognize interest related to unrecognized tax benefits in interest expense and penalties in operating expenses. There were no interest or penalties recognized on the statements of income as a result of the adoption. The Organization's federal Forms 990, Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax, for the years ended June 30, 2009, 2008, and 2007, remain subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service and various state agencies.
