Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 1

Kanakuk Ministries has six voting board members. Each board member has one vote. Per the governing documents, if there is a tie vote, the board chair's vote is the tie breaking vote.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 2

Joe White, Debbie-Jo White, & Cooper White - Family & Business relationship

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

The Form 990 is prepared by an independent CPA firm; then reviewed by the Controller and CFO; and then provided to the board for review before being filed with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The board signs a conflict of interest policy annually disclosing any potential conflicts. These are reviewed by the CFO/Assistant secretary. If a conflict arises at a board meeting or in the course of business, the individual would abstain from deliberations and voting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The board approves compensation of officers and key employees on an annual basis. The board utilizes independent wage surveys from both local and national sources in the compensation evaluation process. The deliberations and decision are documented in the board minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are available upon request.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990 Part XII, Line 2C:

The organization's audit committee and Board assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of its independent accountant. This process has not changed since the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The financial statement effects of a tax position taken or expected to be taken are recognized in the financial statements when it is more likely than not, based on the technical merits, that the position will be sustained upon examination. Interest and penalties, if any, are included in expenses in the statements of activities. As of December 31, 2013 and 2012, Kanakuk had no uncertain tax positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the financial statements. Kanakuk files information tax returns in the U.S. and various states. Kanakuk is generally no longer subject to U.S. federal and state income tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2010.

IRS990/Desc0The Camp Ministries program held camping activities at eight separate camping facilities as well as a traveling camp. In 2013, 460 families were served at the K-Kauai Family Kamp. The kid-camps served over 11,326 children and teens. Campers are encouraged to grow in their relationship with the Lord, their families, and their friends. The K-Kauai facility also provides classroom and lodging accommodations to 119 graduate students studying to become youth ministers through the Kanakuk Institute, as well as 79 students participating in the Link Year Program.
