Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

St. Louis book works was founded in 2011 to promote verbal, visual and cultural literacy through creative expression. Young people in the program work with volunteer editors to write and illustrate their own books. There were 15 graduates from the book works program in 2016. Marion prison project - in 2010 we started training twelve inmates at a federal penitentiary to repair bicycles. The prisoners have worked diligently to restore the used bikes to a condition that a child would be happy to see. The men who work on these bikes have chosen to do something productive rather than working out and watching tv. What started a few years ago as an experiment to increase the number of bikes we could build for the kids at bicycle works and other non-profits has evolved into more than we imagined. 2,147 remaining bikes were either scrapped or recycled.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0EARN-A-COMPUTER PROGRAM - IN 1996, WE INTRODUCED ST. LOUIS BYTE WORKS, THROUGH WHICH CHILDREN CAN EARN A COMPLETE DESKTOP COMPUTER SYSTEM. THE SIX-WEEK COURSE GIVES THEM THE TECHNICAL SKILLS THEY NEED TO USE AND MAINTAIN IT, ALL WHILE SEEING FIRST-HAND THE POWER OF RESPONSIBILITY AND COMMITMENT. IN 2016, WE DONATED 185 WORKING COMPUTERS TO CHILDREN IN THE ST.LOUIS AREA. IN ADDITION WE PLACED SEVERAL POUNDS OF USED COMPUTER WARE INTO PROPER RECYCLING FACILITIES.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0ST.
